WICHITA, Kan. – Concordia (Neb.) used a pair of offensive explosions of more than five runs Friday evening, rolling past Dakota State (S.D.) 13-2 in five innings in the second game of the Friends (Kan.) Tournament. The two-day softball tournament is being held at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
Dakota State dropped to 0-10 overall record. Concordia of the Great Plains Athletic Conference improved to 4-6 overall record.
The Trojans wrap up their preseason tournament Saturday with another two-game slate. DSU plays Peru State (Neb.) at 10 a.m. and faces host-team Friends at 2 p.m.
Concordia (Neb.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
- Concordia plated five runs with two outs in the opening inning, highlighted by a 3-run home run by Delanie Voshell for a 5-0 lead.
- Dakota State answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. With Michelle Evdos on first base with two outs, Rebecca Hazlett drilled an RBI double to left field as Evdos scored home for DSU's first run of the game (DSU trailed 5-1).
- After Hazlett advanced to third base on throw on the same play, she scored home caused by CUNE's wild pitch as DSU reduced their deficit to 5-2 in the bottom first.
- Kylie Shottenkirk produced an RBI double in the top second frame and extended Concordia's lead to 7-2 after she scored on the throw.
- Shottenkirk sparked the Bulldogs' six-run production in the top fourth inning with a 3-run home run. Hanna Bowers added an RBI single to balloon CUNE's lead to 13-2.
- Dakota State left a runner on base in the bottom fifth frame, securing the victory for the Bulldogs.
- CUNE tallied 13 hits in the game compared to DSU two hits.
- Hazlett had a double, RBI, and a run scored for the Trojans. Evdso added a single. Rosie Philop, Hannah McFarland, and Alexus Foster each registered a walk. McFarland swiped one base.
- Shottenkirk hit a home run, double, single, and drove in a game-high five runs for CUNE. Voshell added a home run, single and three RBIs. Hanna Bowers and Zoie Isom each had two hits and an RBI.
- Grace Ortmeier (L, 0-5) took the defeat in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She pitched 3 1/3 innings. Philop worked for two outs in relief. Maycee Bricker pitched a shutout fifth inning and recorded two strikeouts.
- Jerzi Rowe (W, 1-4) pitched a complete game victory for Concordia. She allowed two runs on two hits and registered four strikeouts.
