DSU softball could not overcome (RV) Friends' late surge

WICHITA, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to overcome host-team Friends (Kan.) late surge in the final game on the second day of softball preseason tournament Saturday afternoon at Two Rivers Youth Complex.  DSU led 2-1 for four-and-half innings, while FU scored six unanswered runs to secure a 7-3 victory.

The Trojans are 0-12 overall record.  Friends, receiving votes (RV) in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, evened their overall record to 4-4.

Dakota State takes a week off before returning to action.  DSU plays another opponent from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, taking on Tabor (Kan.) in Hillsboro, Kan. on March 16.  The Trojans then travel to Columbia, Mo., on March 17 to face Stephens (Mo.).

(RV) Friends (Kan.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

  • With runners on first and third bases with one out in the bottom first frame, Carolyn Dallimore produced an RBI fielder's choice to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
  • Jacquelyn Folkers led off the top third with a walk for the Trojans.  She swiped to second base.  Carrington followed up with a single to advance Folkers to third base.  Entringer swiped to second base, while Folkers was tagged out at home.
  • Rosie Philop hit a single to advance Entringer to third base for DSU in the top third.  Friends committed a defensive miscue on the same play, allowing Entringer to score as the Trojans knotted the game at 1-1.
  • Entringer hit a single with one out in the top fifth for DSU.  She advanced to second base after Rosie Philop's ground out.  Michelle Evdos hit a single to advance Entringer to third base.  While on the same play, Friends committed a defensive miscue to allow Entringer to score to grab a 2-1 lead for the Trojans.
  • The Falcons plated three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, highlighted by Laila Spracklen's RBI double.  Priscilla Mora added an RBI single to earn a 4-2 lead.
  • Dallimore produced a 2-RBI single, followed by Mora's RBI single in the bottom sixth to balloon FU's lead to 7-2.
  • Entringer recorded a walk with one out in the top seventh for DSU.  Evdos followed up with a single with two outs and advanced Entringer to second base.
  • Rebecca Hazlett hit an RBI single to score Entringer as the Trojans trailed 7-3.  On the same play, Evdos was tagged out at home and ended the game.
  • The Falcons outhit the Trojans 10-6 in the game.  A combined 10 defensive errors were recorded in the game, with six errors coming from DSU and four errors from FU.
  • Entringer paced Dakota State by going 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles and walked once.  She scored three times.  Evdos added two singles.  Hazlett had a single and an RBI.  Philop had a hit.
  • Spracklen led Friends with a double, single, and an RBI.  Fallyn Marshall collected two hits and two runs scored.  Mora had two singles and drove in two runs.  Dallimore had a single and tallied three RBIs.
  • Maycee Bricker (L, 0-4) tossed a complete game, despite the setback for Dakota State.  She allowed seven runs on 10 hits. 
  • Isabelle Schwien earned the victory after pitching a complete game for Friends.  She allowed three runs (two unearned) on six hits.  She registered seven strikeouts.
