DSU softball wins third straight NSAA weekend series

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) scored at least a run in every inning in the third game of a rare North Star Athletic Association softball tripleheader at Sanford Sports Complex Sunday afternoon, holding off Viterbo (Wis.) by the score of 16-10.  The Trojans earned their third straight weekend NSAA series victory (Mayville State, N.D., Presentation, S.D., and Viterbo).

Dakota State improved their overall record to 12-21 and 11-6 record in the league.  Viterbo fell to 10-23 overall record and 6-13 NSAA conference record.

DSU outscored VU 47-40 in the tripleheader series, despite facing high wind conditions.  In addition, the Trojans racked up a total of 55 hits compared to the V-Hawks 53 hits.

The Trojans continue their busy schedule as they step aside their North Star Athletic Association action Tuesday evening, visiting Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a doubleheader.  The games will be played at Bishop Muller Complex with the first game starting at 3 p.m.

Dakota State (S.D.) 16, Viterbo (Wis.) 10 – FINAL

  • Dakota State plated three runs in the bottom first inning to earn the first lead of the game.  Carrington Entringer led off with a single and swiped to second base.  She advanced to third base after VU's passed ball.
  • Hannah McFarland collected an RBI to score Entringer for 1-0 DSU lead in the bottom first (McFarland reached safely on first base after V-Hawks' defensive error).
  • Michelle Evdos blasted a 2-run home run and scored McFarland as Dakota State made it 3-0 in the bottom first.
  • Morgan James hit a double with one out for Viterbo in the top second frame.  Marissa Carter-Olson followed up with an RBI single to score James as the V-Hawks trailed 3-1 (Carter-Olson was tagged out advancing to second base).
  • The Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom second inning.  Jacquelyn Folkers and Entringer hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning.  Both Folkers and Entringer swiped one base.
  • McFarland recorded an RBI ground out to score Folkers to extend DS's lead to 4-1 in the bottom second (Entringer advanced to third base). 
  • Dakota State made it 5-1 as Entringer stole home in the bottom second.
  • The Trojans plated four runs in the bottom third inning to balloon their lead.  Mackenzie Sims reached first base after VU committed a defensive error.  Rosie Philop followed up with a single to advance Sims to third base (Philop advanced to second base after another V-Hawks' defensive error). 
  • Folkers produced a 2-RBI single to score Sims and Philop to extend DS's lead to 7-1 in the bottom third.
  • Entringer added a double to advance Folkers to third base in the bottom third.  After McFarland's fielder's choice to advance Entringer to third base (Folkers tagged out at home), Evdos hit a 2-RBI single to score Entringer and McFarland to balloon DSU's lead to 9-1.
  • Viterbo scored three runs in the top fourth inning.  Brittney Slocum led off with a single.  Haleigh Zanoni and Carter-Olson hit back-to-back doubles, as Carter-Olson produced 2-RBI double to score Slocum and Zanoni (VU trailed 9-3).
  • The V-Hawks reduced their deficit to 9-4 as Carter-Olson scored after DSU's wild pitch in the top fourth.
  • Maycee Bricker led off the bottom fourth with a double and advanced to third base after VU's passed ball.  Hannah Feser hit an RBI single to score Bricker as the Trojans widened their lead to 10-4.
  • Viterbo produced another three-run in top fifth inning, ignited by a 2-run home run from Slocum (DSU led 10-6).
  • Zanoni followed up with a double, while Carter-Olson reached safely on first base after a fielder choice for the V-Hawks in the top fifth.  Megan Jardine hit an RBI single to score Zanoni as Viterbo cut Dakota State's lead to 10-7.
  • Dakota State continued its scoring run with two runs in the bottom fifth, fueled by Folkers' lead off triple.  She scored home after VU's passed ball, extending DSU's lead to 11-7.
  • The Trojans' lead grew to 12-7 as Evdos blasted a solo home run to left field with two outs in the bottom fifth.
  • Viterbo scored three runs for the third straight innings, collecting RBI singles from Zanoni, Carter-Olson, and Grace Brewer.  The V-Hawks reduced their deficit to 12-10.
  • Dakota State plated four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Sims drilled a lead-off double and swiped to third base.  Philop produced an RBI to score Sims to make it 13-10 in favor of DSU (Philop reached safely on first base after VU's error).
  • Folkers added a single to advance pinch runner Olivia Peterson (for Philop) to second base.  Dakota State ballooned their lead to 16-10 as Entringer blasted a 3-run home run in the bottom sixth.
  • Viterbo left a runner in the final inning, securing the victory for Dakota State.
  • DSU outhit VU 20-16 in the game.  The V-Hawks committed six defensive errors compared to the Trojans two defensive errors.  VU left nine runners on base while DSU left seven runners left on base.
  • Folkers fueled the Trojans' offense attack by going perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with a triple, three singles, and collected two RBIs.  She scored three times and swiped one base.  Entringer added a home run, double, two singles, three RBIs and scored four times.  Entringer swiped three bases.
  • Evdos added two home runs, single and collected a game-high five RBIs for Dakota State.  Sophia Cordova tallied three singles.  Bricker had a double and a walk.  Feser had two hits and an RBI.  Sims recorded a double, single, and swiped one base.
  • Slocum led the V-Hawks with a home run, two singles, and two RBIs.  She scored three times.  Zanoni added two doubles, a single, and an RBI.  Carter-Olson had three hits and tallied four RBIs.  Jardine and Brewer each recorded a hit and an RBI.  Makayla Nortman, Courtney Denton, and Morgan James each had a hit.
  • Bricker (W, 6-8) tossed a complete game victory for DSU.  She struck out seven VU's batters, collected a total of 17 strikeouts on the same day (registered a season-high 10 strikeouts in the first game of the tripleheader earlier Sunday).
  • Payton Lamont (L, 1-5) recorded the defeat after working for 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (two unearned) on 10 hits.  Morgan Fuhrer pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief.
