Trojans win NSAA softball series with Comets after earning a split

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) produced their first North Star Athletic Association four-game series victory this season Monday, shutting down Mayville State (N.D.) 5-0 in the first game at American State Bank Sports Complex.  The Comets finished the four-game series with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Trojans. 

DSU's season-high four-game winning streak came to an end after the setback, standing at 6-16 overall record and 5-3 NSAA conference record.  The Trojans matched their best eight-game conference start from last year, as well as the 2018 season.  Mayville State is 2-14 overall record and 1-7 NSAA conference record.

Dakota State had won seven times in the last nine meetings in the series meeting with Mayville State.

The Trojans are scheduled to host Presentation (S.D.) on Friday and Saturday in another North Star Athletic Association four-game series.  Site and game times have not yet been determined.  Please stay tuned to the DSU Athletics' website for future updates on schedule changes and game times.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Mayville State (N.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game in the top second inning, sparked by Mackenzie Sims' lead-off double.  Hannah McFarland followed up with an RBI double to score Sims for 1-0 DSU lead.
  • Carrington Entringer hit a single with one out and advanced to third base on the same play after a defensive error by the Comets in the top third frame.
  • Alexus Foster followed up with an RBI sacrifice ground out to score Entringer as the Trojans extended their lead to 2-0 in the top third.
  • DSU produced three-run sixth inning to balloon their lead.  Foster hit a single with one out.  Michelle Evdos reached safely on first base after MSU's defensive miscue and advanced Foster to second base.
  • Rosie Philop hit an RBI single to score Foster (Evdos advanced to third base and Philop to second base on the same play), ballooning DSU's lead to 3-0 in the top sixth.
  • Dakota State extended their lead to 4-0 in the top sixth after Maycee Bricker's RBI sacrifice fly to score Evdos.  Jadynn Alvarado, pinch runner for Philop, advanced to third base and scored home on the throw to make it 5-0 in favor of the Trojans.
  • Mayville State did not pass by the second base throughout the game, securing the victory for DSU.
  • The Trojans had six hits in the game compared to the Comets four hits.  MSU left six runners on base while DSU had two runners left on base.
  • Sims had a double for Dakota State.  Foster, Philop, and McFarland each added a single and an RBI.  Entringer and Sophia Cordova each tallied a hit.
  • Sam Shumway, Miquela Pino, Alyssa Avila, and Isis Johnson each recorded a single for Mayville State.  Shumway and Mackenzie Iverson each registered a walk.
  • Bricker (W, 3-6) tossed her second straight complete game victory in the series for DSU.  She scattered four singles and recorded six strikeouts.
  • Sidney Fairbanks (L, 0-9) took the setback after pitching a complete game for MSU.  She allowed five runs (three unearned) on six hits.

Game 2 – Mayville State (N.D.) 2, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • Mayville State scored twice in the bottom first inning of the four-game series finale, securing the victory over the Trojans.  Both teams were unable to score for the rest of the game.
  • Mackenzie Iverson hit a single with one out and advanced to third base after Erika Howell's double for MSU.  Mackenzie Hughes collected an RBI ground out, scoring Iverson for 1-0 Comets lead.
  • Mayville State extended their lead to 2-0 after Brooke Roeges drilled an RBI double to score Howell in the top first frame.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring opportunity in the top second inning, despite a single from Philop and advanced to second base after McFarland's sacrifice bunt.
  • The Comets left the bases full in the bottom half of the third inning as the Trojans' defense halted their scoring chances.  MSU held on to their 2-0 lead after three innings.
  • Jacquelyn Folkers led off the top sixth inning with a single and swiped to second base for Dakota State.  She advanced to third base after Foster's sacrifice bunt.  Evdos followed up with a walk.  MSU held off the Trojans from scoring after six innings (MSU led 2-0).
  • Dakota State left a runner on first base when the game ended, despite a single from Sims.
  • Both teams registered four hits in the game and did not commit a defensive error.  The Comets left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans with five runners left on base.
  • Philop led DSU with two singles.  Sims and Folkers each added a single.  Grace Ortmeier and Evdos each had a walk.  Evdos and Folkers each swiped one base.
  • Roeges had a double and an RBI for MSU.  Hughes added an RBI.  Howell recorded a double and a run scored.  Iverson had a single and a run scored.  Shumway, Iverson, Howell, Hughes, and Roeges each registered a walk.  Alyssa Avila collected a single.
  • Ortmeier (L, 2-6) took the setback, despite pitching a complete game for Dakota State.  She allowed two runs on four hits.
  • Courtney Boll (W, 2-5) earned the a complete game victory for Mayville State, scattering four singles.  She also struck out six DSU batters.
