YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) blasted five home runs on a warm and sunny day Friday at Sertoma Park, handing Presentation (S.D.) their first North Star Athletic Association softball setbacks in a doubleheader sweep. The Trojans won both games in five innings, outscoring the Saints 24-7 (won 12-3 in game one and 12-4 in game 2).
Dakota State won for the sixth time in the last seven games, improving their overall record to 8-16 and 7-3 record in the league. Presentation, who have not played since March 29, fell to 8-12 overall record and 4-2 NSAA conference record.
It was the third straight weekend that Dakota State was forced to play on a neutral site in the North Star action.
Both teams wrap up their four-game North Star Athletic Association series Saturday with another doubleheader at Sertoma Park. The first game is set for 12 p.m.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 12, Presentation (S.D.) 3 – FINAL/5 innings
- Dakota State roared to an 11-0 lead after three innings and never trailed in the game.
- The Trojans through the full lineup in the bottom first inning, producing five runs and five hits, highlighted by four consecutive hits to start the bottom first.
- Carrington Entringer kicked off the bottom first frame with a single for the Trojans. She swiped to second base. Alexus Foster recorded a walk.
- Michelle Evdos smashed a 3-run home run to open a 3-0 DSU lead in the bottom first inning.
- Maycee Bricker continued the Trojans' hot start with a double. Hannah McFarland hit an RBI single with two outs and scored Bricker to make it 4-0 in favor of Dakota State.
- Mackenzie Sims drilled an RBI triple to score McFarland as the Trojans ballooned their lead to 5-0 in the bottom first.
- Dakota State continued its offense attack in the bottom second after scoring four runs. Entringer led off with a double and swiped to third base. Foster drilled an RBI triple to score Entringer, extending their lead to 6-0.
- After pitcher and defensive changes by the Saints, the Trojans made it 7-0 when Evdos hit an RBI single to score Foster in the bottom second.
- Bricker hit a double to advance Evdos on the following play for DSU In the bottom second. Rosie Philop produced an RBI single to score Evdos for an 8-0 Trojans lead (Bricker was tagged out at home on the same play).
- Dakota State made it 9-0 as McFarland reached safely on base after a defensive miscue by PC, allowing Philop to score.
- DSU scored two more runs in the bottom third frame to widen their lead by double-digits. Sophia Cordova reached safely on base after a defensive error by the Saints. Entringer followed up a single and advanced Cordova to third base. Foster added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation.
- Evdos registered an RBI walk to score Cordova to give DSU a 10-0 lead in the bottom third.
- Dakota State made it 11-0 as Philop produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Entringer in the bottom third frame.
- Presentation ended its scoring drought in the top fourth inning. Yulissa Pena led off with a walk. Sara Shevenell reached on first after DSU's defensive error (Pena advanced to second base). Victoria Vau hit a ground out and advanced Pena to third base and Shevenell to third base.
- Camile Vestral hit an RBI single to score Pena for the Saints first run of the game in the top fourth (DSU led 11-1).
- Chloe Dominger reached first base after DSU's defensive miscue, allowing Shevenell to score as the Saints trailed 11-2 (Vestal to third base).
- Vestal scored home after a stolen base attempt by Dominger failed in the top fourth inning (DSU led 11-3).
- Sims blasted a lead-off solo home run in the bottom fourth inning to extend Dakota State's lead to 12-3.
- Presentation left a runner on base when the game ended in the fifth inning, securing the victory for Dakota State.
- The Trojans outhit the Saints 12-2 in the game. DSU registered seven extra-base hits, with two home runs, two triples, and three doubles. Both teams committed two defensive errors.
- Evdos had a home run, single, and collected five RBIs for DSU. Entringer added a double, two singles, and scored twice. She also had two stolen bases. Sims had a home run, triple, and two RBIs.
- Bricker tallied two doubles and a run scored for Dakota State. Philop added a single and two RBIs. Foster had a triple, RBI, and two walks. McFaland recorded a single and an RBI.
- Foster and McFarland each recorded a stolen base for the Trojans.
- Vestal led the Saints with a single and an RBI. Cassy Loa added a single and a walk. Breanna dunn, Bella Pinoti, Pena, and Shevenell each had a walk.
- Bricker (W, 4-6) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State. She scattered two singles and allowed three runs (two unearned).
- Shevenell (L, 5-4) took the loss in the pitching circle for Presentation. She worked for three innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits. Pena pitched one-plus inning in relief, giving up four runs (two unearned) on four hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 12, Presentation (S.D.) 4 – FINAL/5 innings
- Dakota State used another fast start in the second game, racking up five runs after the first inning and never trailed in the game.
- Foster blasted a solo home run with one out in the bottom first frame for 1-0 DSU lead.
- Evdos followed up with a double for the Trojans, while Rebecca Hazlett added a walk. Both Evdos and Hazlett advanced one base after PC's passed ball.
- McFarland produced an RBI ground out to score Evdos to widen DSU's lead to 2-0 in the bottom first (Hazlett advanced to third base). Dakota State made it 3-0 as Philop added a single to score Hazlett.
- Grace Ortmeier recorded a walk and advanced Philop to second base for DSU. Sims followed up with an RBI single to score Philop for a 4-0 lead (Ortmeier advanced to third base).
- Sims swiped to second base, while Ortmeier scored home after PC's defensive error. DSU led 5-0 after the first inning.
- The Saints left a bases loaded situation in the top second inning, despite a double by Vau, a walk by Pena and Sydney Carter reaching safely on first after DSU's defensive error.
- Presentation snapped their scoring drought in the top third frame with three runs. Dunn led off with a walk and swiped to second base. Vestal added a walk with one out. Dunn and Vestal each swiped one base (Dunn to third base and Vestal to third base).
- Shevenell hit an RBI double to score Dunn as the Saints trailed 5-1 (Vestal advanced to third base) in the top third frame.
- Vau recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Vestal as Presentation cut DSU's lead to 5-2 in the top third (Shevenell advanced to third base).
- The Saints trimmed the Trojans' lead to 5-3 as Pena followed up with an RBI single to score Shevenell in the top third.
- Dakota State erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the third inning, fueled by lead-off single by McFarland followed by Philop's 2-run home run blast. Philop hit her first collegiate home run, ballooning their lead to 7-3.
- Sims hit a single with one out, followed by Jacquelyn Folkers' walk to advance Sims to second base for DSU in the bottom third. Entringer drilled a 2-RBI double to score Sims and Folkers to make it 9-3 in favor of the Trojans.
- Dakota State made it 10-3 as Foster hit an RBI single to score Entringer in the bottom third inning.
- The Trojans wrapped up their third inning surge with a 2-run home run blast by Hazlett (scored Foster), widening their lead to 12-3
- Loa and Bella Pinotti each hit a double in the top fourth inning, producing a run for the Saints. Pinotti earned an RBI to score Loa as Presentation trailed 12-4.
- The Saints left two runners on base when the game ended in the top fifth inning, securing the second NSAA doubleheader sweep of the season for the Trojans.
- DSU registered 10 hits in the game compared to PC nine hits.
- Philop went 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single, and drove in three runs for Dakota State. Foster added a home run, single, and two RBIs. Sims collected two singles and an RBI. Hazlett had a home run and two RBIs. Entringer registered a double and two RBIs.
- Foster, Evdos, Hazlett, McFarland, Ortmeier, Delaney Gregor, and Folkers each recorded a walk for DSU. McFarland and Sims each swiped one base.
- Vau and Shevenall each had a double, single, and an RBI for Presentation. Loa added a double and single. Dunn registered a single and swiped two bases. Pinotti had a double and an RBI. Pena had a double and an RBI.
- Ortmeier (W, 3-6) earned a complete game victory in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed four runs on nine hits and recorded four strikeouts.
- Lauren Paredes (L, 3-6) recorded the defeat after pitching three innings. She allowed 12 runs (one unearned) on 10 hits. Shevenell tossed one shutout inning in relief.
