MITCHELL, S.D. – No. 24 Dakota State (S.D.) rallied from a two-set deficit but ultimately fell in a five-set thriller to (RV) Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Monday evening inside the Christen Family Athletic Center. The Tigers won by set scores of 25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 22-25, and 15-8.
Dakota State dropped their fourth straight match, which all went to five sets, and fell to 14-10 overall record. Dakota Wesleyan improved to 15-10 overall record. It was the fifth time in the last seven meetings that the match went to five sets.
Match Summary
The Trojans struggled to find rhythm early as the Tigers hit a blazing .371 and .275 in the first two sets to take a commanding lead. Dakota State regrouped in the third behind its defense and middle attack, pulling out a tight 25-23 win before extending the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth. Dakota Wesleyan regained control in the decisive set, jumping to an early 7-2 advantage and closing the match on a 15-8 decision.
Trojans by the Numbers
- Sophie Tuttle led all attackers with 21 kills (tied career high), career-high 19 digs, and a block assist for 21.5 points.
- Tristyn Maras and Macey Wathen each tallied double-digit kills — Maras with 14 kills and Wathen adding 13 kills and four block assists.
- Maddi Langerock directed the offense with 50 assists, 16 digs, and four block assists.
- Defensively, Kate VanRooyan anchored the back row with a match-high 32 digs (season-high), while Sydney Wathen and Tuttle contributed 16 and 19 digs respectively.
- Dakota State finished with 58 kills, hitting .131, and posted 108 digs as a team.
Tigers' Leaders
Dakota Wesleyan countered with a balanced offense led by Evy Knoblock's 21 kills and Kayleigh Hybertson's 55 assists and 19 digs. Madisyn Grimsrud added 15 kills and five block assists, while Lily Ranschau chipped in 15 kills. The Tigers tallied 65 kills at a .234 clip and out-dug DSU 119-108.
