Trojans and (RV) Jimmies split North Star baseball conference opener

Dakota State (S.D.) earns first win over Jamestown (N.D.) since April 12, 2015

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) blasted four home runs in the North Star Athletic Association baseball season opener, earning a 10-4 victory over Jamestown (N.D.) at Flynn Field Thursday afternoon.  The Jimmies rallied for a 12-5 win in the second game to produce a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 14-13 overall record.  Jamestown, who received votes in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, is 20-8 overall record.  Both teams are 1-1 record in the league.

The Trojans earned their first victory over a team that received votes recognition in the national poll this season.  DSU also snapped the losing skid in the series meeting with UJ, earning their first win over the Jimmies since April 12, 2015.

It was the first time in 13 years that Jamestown had played at Flynn Field in Madison (March 24-25, 2012).

Both DSU and UJ play another doubleheader Friday afternoon to complete their NSAA four-game series opener, starting with the first game at 1 p.m.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 10, (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 4 – FINAL

Cameron DeMaria blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom second inning to take a 1-0 lead for Dakota State in the first game of the doubleheader (7-inning game).

The Trojans continued their scoring run with three more runs.  Camaron Haller hit a single with one out and advanced to third base after Hunter Vikemyr's double.  Seth Altwine smashed a 3-run home run to balloon DSU's lead to 4-0.

Jamestown ended their scoring drought in the top fourth as Triston Madison hit a solo home run (DSU led 4-1).

Ben Patton smashed a lead-off home run in the top fifth inning as the Jimmies trimmed the Trojans' lead to 4-2.

Dakota State answered with six runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame, fueled by a solo home run with one out by Aidan Perry (DSU led 5-2).  Connor Raney followed up with a single followed by DeMaria's hit-by-pitch.

Cassidy Watt blasted a 3-run home run to widen the Trojans' lead to 8-2 in the bottom fifth.

Haller reached first base after an error by the Jimmies, followed by back-to-back walks by Vikemyr and Altwine to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU In the bottom fifth.  The Trojans made it 9-2 as Darcy Barry was hit-by-pitch, earning an RBI to score Haller.

Perry recorded an RBI walk to score Vikemyr as Dakota State extended their lead to 10-2 in the bottom fifth.

Jordan Singleton hit a lead-off solo home run in the top sixth inning as Jamestown trailed 10-3.  The Jimmies added another run in the top seventh, caused by DSU's defensive error (DSU led 10-4). 

The Trojans tallied 11 hits in the game compared to the Jimmies seven hits.

DeMaria was 3-of-3 at the plate with a home run, two singles, RBI, and scored two times for Dakota State.  Altwine and Watt each added a home run and drove in three runs.  Perry collected a home run, two RBIs, and two walks.  Vikemyr recorded a double, single and scored two times.  Raney and Dawson Portner each recorded a single. 

Singleton, Madison, and Patton each had a home run and an RBI for Jamestown.  Chase Burke had a double and a run scored.  Alex Alva, Ryan Muizelaar, and Landon Runge each had a hit.

Nicholai Arbach (W, 4-2) tossed a complete game victory for DSU.  He allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  He struck out UJ's batters ten times.

Avery Liestman (L, 5-2) recorded the defeat after working 4 1/3 innings on the pitching mound for UJ.  He gave up 10 runs (one unearned) on nine hits.  He recorded five strikeouts.  Kai Mayfield and Payton Hochhalter each combined for 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Game 2 – (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 12, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

Jamestown used a fast start in the second game of the doubleheader (9-inning game) and never trailed to secure a doubleheader split.

Alva hit a solo home run with one out in the top second inning to give UJ a 1-0 lead.  Muizelaar followed up with a double and advanced to third base after DSU's wild pitch.  The Jimmies made it 2-0 as Singleton hit an RBI single to score Muizelaar.

UJ extended their lead to 3-0 in the top second as Runge hit a solo home run with two outs.

The Trojans answered with a run in the bottom half of the second inning.  Watt reached safely on base after UJ's defensive error.  Daniel Leshner, catcher's courtesy runner for Watt, advanced to third after Jimmies' wild pitch.  Haller produced an RBI ground out to score Leshner as DSU trailed 3-1.

Muizelaar hit a solo home run with one out as Jamestown's lead grew to 4-1 in the top third.

Perry blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom fourth inning as Dakota State cut UJ's lead to 4-2.

Jamestown scored five runs in the top seventh, highlighted by a 2-run home run by Singleton.  Beb Swebbynsib capped the top seventh with a 2-RBI single to make it 9-2 in favor of Jimmies.

Barry hit a 3-run home run in the bottom seventh inning as Dakota State trimmed Jamestown's lead to 9-5.

The Jimmies added three runs in the final two innings to secure the victory, highlighted by Isaiah Roebuck's 2-RBI double in the top eighth and Burke's solo home run in the top ninth to secure a 12-5 victory.

UJ outhit DSU 13-4 in the game.

Perry finished the game by going 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, double, and an RBI for the Trojans.  Barry added a home run, walk, and collected three RBIs.  Haller recorded an RBI.  Altwine registered two walks.

Singleton led the Jimmies with a home run, two singles, and three RBIs.  Muizelaar and Runge each had two hits and an RBI.  Burke and Alva each had a home run and an RBI.  Roebuck recorded a double and two RBIs.  Patton and Riki Okamotoa each had a hit.  Swennumson registered a single and two RBIs.

Sam Tyrpa (L, 2-5) took the defeat on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on nine hits.  He registered four strikeouts.  Treyten Kolar, Hayden Leighty, and Keaton Young also pitched in relief.

Luke Zimmer (W, 3-3) earned the victory after working six innings.  He allowed two runs on two hits and registered eight strikeouts.  Ethan Petty worked for two outs in the bottom seventh, giving up three runs (one unearned) on two hits.  Ben Bohlmann tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief, collecting four strikeouts.
