Trojans continue NSAA action on road Saturday and Sunday at Dickinson State (N.D.)

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The North Star Athletic Association softball leader Jamestown (N.D.) produced 16 hits in each game Monday afternoon, taking the final two games of the four-game series with Dakota State (S.D.) at Nelson Family Bubble.  The Jimmies defeated the Trojans by the scores of 11-2 and 14-4 in five innings to complete the four-game series sweep.

Dakota State is 4-25 overall record and 0-8 NSAA conference record.  Jamestown, receiving votes in the latest edition of the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, is 24-9 overall record and 8-0 record in the league.

The Trojans head to Dickinson, N.D., Saturday and Sunday for the next North Star's four-game series.  Dakota State plays Dickinson State (N.D.) with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. (Central Time)/2 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Saturday and 1 p.m. (Central Time)/12 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Sunday at Bravera Field.

Game 1 – (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

Jamestown produced three singles in the first inning from Trinity Gregg, Maddie Spaeth, and Kayla Quintanilla.  Kylie Yanzuk recorded an RBI walk to score Gregg to give UJ a 1-0 lead.

The Jimmies extended their lead to 3-0 in the top second frame after scoring two runs.

Michelle Evdos drilled an RBI triple to score Jordyn Jeffries, who led off the bottom half of the second inning with a single.  The Trojans trimmed the Jimmies' lead to 3-1 after two innings.

Quincy Hartley led off the bottom third with a single and advanced to second base after Hannah Feser's sacrifice bunt.  Ally Morrissey added a single with two outs, while Hartley advanced to third.  Hartley scored home on the same play after UJ's defensive miscue as the Trojans cut their deficit to 3-2.

Jamestown produced three straight scoring plays in the top fourth with five runs scored, capped by a 2-run home run from Quintanilla for 8-2 lead.

Maddie Spaeth highlighted the top seventh inning with a 2-RBI triple, ballooning UJ's lead to 10-2.  Quintanilla followed up with an RBI ground out to score Spaeth to make it 11-2 in favor of the Jimmies.

The Trojans left a runner on first base when the game ended, securing the victory for Jamestown.

UJ outhit DSU 16-6 in the game. 

Morrissey went 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State.  Evdos added a triple and an RBI.  Jeffries and Hartley each had a single. 

Gregg and Spaeth each had four hits for Jamestown.  Spaeth and three RBIs.  Weigel added two singles and two RBIs.  Quintnilla a home run, single, and three RBIs.  Natalie Draper recorded two singles.

Analicia Burgos (L, 0-7) recorded the defeat in the pitching circle for DSU.  She gave up three runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Makenna McGee and Mason Usselman each worked in relief.

Hope Ransome (W, 7-4) earned the victory for UJ.  She tossed five innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Maddie Hairgrove pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Game 2 – (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL/5 innings

Jamestown scored 12 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to erase their 4-2 deficit to secure the four-game series finale victory.

The Trojans took the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning with three runs scored.  Hannah McFarland led off the inning with single, followed by Morrissey's bunt single to advance McFarland to second base.  Both McFarland and Morrissey each advanced one base after Gabrielle Ortega-Alves' sacrifice bunt.

Jeffries hit an RBI single to score McFarland as the Trojans grabbed a 1-0 lead (Morrissey advanced to third base, while Jeffries advanced to second base after UJ's throw to home plate).

Katie Hansen added an RBI single with two outs to score Morrissey as DSU extended their lead to 2-0.  Julie Maldonado reached safely after UJ's defensive error, allowing Jeffries to score for 3-0 lead in favor of Dakota State.

Sidnie Aasen hit an RBI single in the top second inning as Jamestown trimmed DSU's lead to 3-1.

Jamestown trimmed their deficit to 3-2 as Spaeth hit an RBI triple to score Weigel, who reached on base after DSU's defensive error, in the top third frame.

Evdos hit a single in the bottom third and advanced to second base after Hansen's walk.  Maldonado hit an RBI single to score Evdos as DSU's lead grew to 4-2.

The Jimmies poured in seven runs in the top fourth inning, capped by an RBI double from Tori Olson for 9-3 lead.  She also capped the five-run production in the top fifth inning with 2-RBI single for 14-4 lead.

Jamestown recorded 16 hits in the game compared to Dakota State eight hits.  Both teams left six runners on base.

McFarland, Morrissey, Ortega-Alves, Jeffries, Evdos, Hansen, Maldonado, and Feser each had a single for the Trojans.  Jeffries, Hansen, and Maldonado each had an RBI.  McFarland and Hansen each recorded a walk. 

Spaeth had four hits and four RBIs for the Jimmies.  Olson added three hits and four RBIs.  Gregg and Sydney Grendler each had two hits.

Maycee Bricker (L, 3-6) took the defeat after tossing 3 1/3 innings for Dakota State.  Burgos and Usselman also pitched in relief.

Abby Blair started the game for Jamestown.  She tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  Hairgrove (W, 7-1) earned the victory after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings, limiting the Trojans to one hit and recording five strikeouts.
