MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State struck early but couldn't hold on, settling for a 1-1 draw with Midland (Neb.) on Saturday afternoon in the women's soccer contest at Dan Beacom Track & Field. It was the third home match for DSU in six days against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Freshman forward
Katie Brown gave the Trojans the lead in the 11
th minute, scoring her first career goal off an assist from
Ryelynn Hammer. Despite being out shot 15-1 in the first half, Dakota State carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime thanks to a stellar performance by goalkeeper
Chloe Mart, who tallied eight saves before being subbed out in the 62
nd minute. She finished the game with match- and season-highs 10 saves.
Midland rallied back in the 87
th minute, when AnneMarie Oilepo scored the equalizer to salvage the draw. The Warriors fired 28 shots overall, including 14 on frame, but were held in check by Mart and relief keeper
Sierra Verplancke, who added three saves.
Dakota State (0-2-1 overall record) managed just four total shots, but converted its only attempt on goal. Midland (0-1-1 overall record) dominated statistically, holding an 8-2 edge in corner kicks and committing 10 fouls to the Trojans' six.
The Trojans continue their five-match home stand Monday evening, hosting another opponent from the GPAC. Dakota State hosts College of Saint Mary (Neb.) at 6 p.m.
