MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State surrendered two early goals and could not recover Monday evening, falling 4-1 to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) at Dan Beacom Track and Field. It was the Trojans' fourth home match in a week against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
The Flames struck quickly, as Ella Klusman opened the scoring just 63 seconds into the match off an assist from Izzie Kadavy. Less than three minutes later, Klusman returned the favor, setting up Devon Koyle for a goal that made it 2-0.
CSM's Klusman extended the margin in the 51
st minute, converting a penalty kick for her second goal of the night and third of the season.
Dakota State finally broke through in the 66
th minute when
Nichole Corona netted her second goal of the year, trimming the deficit to 3-1. But College of Saint Mary iced the match in the 89
th minute, with Bella Olsen scoring off assists from Abby Ostergaard and Aubree McCumber.
College of Saint Mary peppered the net with 32 shots, including 15 on goal. DSU goalkeepers
Sierra Verplancke and
Chloe Mart combined for 11 saves. The Flames split time between three keepers, with Jenna Brown and Saydi Headley recording one save apiece.
Corona paced the Trojans with three shots, including the lone goal.
Olivia Bradley, Hannah Hint and
Corona each forced saves. Dakota State managed seven total shots, three on goal.
Dakota State fell to 0-3-1 on the season. College of Saint Mary improved to 1-3.
DSU concludes their five-match home stand on Wednesday versus Morningside (Iowa) at 5 p.m.
