September 3, 2025

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) women's soccer fell behind early and couldn't recover Wednesday evening, dropping a 4-0 non-conference decision to unbeaten Morningside (Iowa) at Dan Beacom Track and Field.  The Trojans closed their five-match home stand in ten days since their season debut on Aug. 25.

The Mustangs (2-0-1 overall record) struck quickly with three goals in the opening 20 minutes. Tuva Hammarlund netted the opener in the 8th minute off an assist from Trinay Garcia. Melissa Tsatiris followed with a goal in the 14th minute, and Garcia added one of her own less than six minutes later for a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

Morningside capped the scoring in the 68th minute when Fien Lampe finished a pass from Keyera Harmon.

Dakota State (0-4-1 overall record) generated offensive chances, outshooting the Mustangs 9-7 in the second half and finishing with 14 shots overall, including six shots on goal.  Clarissa Knoll tallied a team-high two shots on target. The Trojans also had a penalty kick in the 80th minute, but Morningside keeper Fran Telford denied Nichole Corona's attempt.

Goalkeepers Chloe Mart and Sierra Verplancke combined for nine saves for DSU. Mart recorded eight first half stops before Verplancke entered after halftime and added one save.

Morningside controlled much of the possession and finished with 24 total shots, 13 of them on frame. The Mustangs' defense held firm to record their second shutout of the season.

Dakota State plays their first road contest of the season Sunday afternoon, traveling to Marshall, Minn., for a contest at NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State.  Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
