DSU women’s soccer falls short for first win in home finale versus Red Raiders

Trojans could not hold on to their 2-1 lead in the second half in home finale

September 13, 2025

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) put together one of its most spirited efforts of the season Saturday evening at Dan Beacom Track & Field against visiting Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Trojans lead 2-1, but the Red Raiders answered with two second-half goals to rally for a 3-2 non-conference victory in DSU's home finale.

The Trojans fell to 0-7-1 overall record.  The Red Raiders improved to 4-2 overall record.

First Half Highlights
Northwestern struck first in the 27th minute when Camryn Wilkinson found the back of the net. She received a cross from Marissa Talamantes off a corner sequence for a goal, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Dakota State responded with energy and persistence, pushing forward through Onika Kline, who had already tested Northwestern keeper Bailey Bynum with multiple shots. In the 38th minute, Kline finally broke through, converting a pass from Kirsten Piskorski to tie the match 1-1. Just before halftime, Piskorski nearly gave the Trojans the lead, striking a shot off the crossbar, leaving the score even at the break.

Second Half Highlights
The Trojans came out firing after intermission. Less than three minutes into the half, Madison Smalley buried her first goal of the year off an assist from Charli Zimmerman, putting DSU ahead 2-1 in the 48th minute.

Northwestern, however, capitalized on a key opportunity midway through the half. In the 66th minute, Lucy Staines stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to tie the match 2-2.

Just six minutes later, the Raiders pulled ahead for good. Olivia Regnerus tallied her second goal of the season in the 72nd minute, finishing a setup from Taylor Brennan to make it 3-2.

Dakota State pressed for an equalizer in the closing 15 minutes. Kline nearly doubled her tally with two shots on frame, while Hannah Hint also forced a late save. But Northwestern goalkeeper Bailey Bynum stood tall, recording five second-half saves and six overall to preserve the Red Raiders' win.
