DSU women soccer’s first win attempt falls short at Stephens (Mo.)

Dakota State (S.D.) could not hold on to their 2-0 second half lead in Columbia

September 27, 2025

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Dakota State (S.D.) women's soccer put together one of its strongest offensive stretches of the season, but Stephens (Mo.) rallied late to edge the Trojans 3-2 in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon at Battle High School.

DSU's attempt for the first win fell short (0-11-1 overall record).  SU improved to 2-7-1 overall record.

First-Half Highlights
The opening 45 minutes were a tight defensive battle with both sides trading chances. Dakota State earned three corners and six shots in the first half, including a penalty kick opportunity in the 24th minute that sailed wide. Goalkeeper Chloe Mart kept the Trojans level with two saves, while Stephens' keeper Sofia Ramos turned away four shots to preserve the 0-0 scoreline at the break.

Second-Half Highlights
Dakota State came out of halftime with urgency and was rewarded with a pair of quick goals. Just over two minutes into the second half, Nichole Corona converted a setup from Onika Kline in the 48th minute to give DSU a 1-0 advantage. Less than a minute later, Ryelynn Hammer doubled the lead with a clean finish in the 49th minute, pushing the Trojans ahead 2-0 and giving them momentum against the Stars

Stephens began its comeback in the 73rd minute when Ava Leininger capitalized on a feed from Moriah Carnahan to cut the deficit to 2-1. Just 47 seconds later, the roles reversed as Carnahan netted the equalizer off Leininger's assist, stunning DSU with back-to-back strikes that knotted the match at 2-2.

The Stars added their third goal of the game in the 82nd minute when Kylee Kratzer slotted home the go-ahead goal for a 3-2 lead. Despite pushing forward with five second-half corner kicks and late substitutions, the Trojans were unable to find a response.
