Trojans placed second in inaugural Frontier Conference men’s indoor track & field conference meet

Grinde captures high jump title, earns co-Frontier Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Meet award

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) briefly led in Sunday's session of the 2026 Frontier Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex but was unable to hold on to their lead as they finished second as a team. 

Dickinson State captured the team title after scoring 134.5 points in the two-day conference meet. The Trojans edged Montana Tech by one point (116-115) to finish second, followed by Bismarck State (N.D.) fourth with 103 points.  Carroll (Mont.) was fifth with 87.5 points, Rocky Mountain (Mont.) sixth with 84 points, Valley City State (N.D.) seventh with 23 points, Bellevue (Neb.) eighth with 17 points, and Montana Western ninth with six points.

Brock Krueger started the day in the triple jump, leaping 13.64 meters (44 feet, 9 inches) to place fourth for DSU.  Tanner Drietz added 12.49 meters mark (40 feet, 11.75 inches), and Kolter Simon with 12.20 meters (40 feet, .5 inches).

Tysen Grinde produced a career best 4.45 meters (14 feet, 7.25 inches) clearance in the pole vault for Dakota State.  He finished fourth in the event.  Rasmus Loken added a personal record 3.85 meters (12 feet, 7.5 inches) to place ninth, followed by Caden Gortmaker with 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1.5 inches) and Bergen Irey with 3.40 meters mark (11 feet, 1.75 inches).

Grinde captured the high jump title by clearing 2.04 meters (6 feet, 8.25 inches) for DSU.  Dawson Miller added sixth-place finish with 1.89 meters (6 feet, 2.25 inches) clearance, followed by Krueger and Irey tied for seventh with 1.84 meters clearance (6 feet, .5 inches).  Simon cleared the height of 1.79 meters (5 feet, 10.5 inches).

Oliver Tordsen highlighted the Trojans with a personal record 16.31 meters (53 feet, 6.25 inches) to claim the runner-up honor in the shot put.  Lukus Mentele also added a career best 16.04 meters (52 feet, 7.5 inches) to finish fourth, followed by Dylan Johansen fifth with a personal best 15.89 meters (52 feet, 1.75 inches).  Keegan Hensley threw 13.26 meters (43 feet, 6 inches).

Cody Farland started Sunday's running events with a ninth-place finish in the 1-mile run with a season best time of 4:26.93.  Lane Henrichs recorded a personal record 4:31.81, Solomon Carter in 4:39.20, and Blake Schmiedt in 4:45.47.

Grinde was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 9.09 seconds for the Trojans.  Jagger Lombard placed sixth in the 60-meter dash finals.

Mohamed Muse earned a runner-up finish in the 600-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 20.64 seconds.  Tyler Nicke added a fourth-place finish in 1:23.69, followed by Logan Recoy with a personal record 1:23.83.  Holden Jelen finished with a time of 1:27.51.

Franklin Johns posted a season best time of 1:56.28 to place third in the 800-meter run.  Carter added a time of 1:58.20 to finish sixth.  Nicke clocked a time of 2:00.04, Recoy in 2:03.65, and Miller in 2:04.14.

Lombard was eighth in the 200-meter dash for the Trojans, recording a time of 22.66 seconds.  Weston Frangenberg hit a personal record time of 23.04 seconds.  Ben Witt finished with a time of 23.84 seconds.

Joshua Tucker clocked a time of 9 minutes, 16.32 seconds in the 3000-meter run, followed by Benjamin Strunk with a time of 9:24.58.  and Jelen in 9:49.99.

Aaron Van Hemert, Frangenberg, Carter, and Muse finished the day with a time of 3:37.52 in the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Grinde shared the Frontier Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Meet after scoring 23 points (shared award with Ty Leischner of Dickinson State).  He was second in the heptathlon (8 points), first in high jump (10 points), and fourth in the pole vault (5 points).

Dakota State awaits to hear the official national qualifiers list from the NAIA national office for the upcoming NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships.  The three-day national meet takes place in Gainesville, Fla., on March 5-7.
