Dakota State drops high-scoring baseball affair to LSU-Alexandria

Trojans finish 1-1 on their season opening day in Cajun Collision

STERLINGTON, La. – Dakota State dropped a high-scoring affair to LSU-Alexandria, 21-10, on Feb. 6 at Sterlington Sports Complex Field #5 in Sterlington, La.  The Trojans split a pair of games on their season opening day in the Cajun Collision, hosted by LSU-Shreveport at Sterlington Sports Complex.

Dakota State is 1-1 overall record, who faced both teams from the Red River Athletic Conference.  LSU-Alexandria improved to 5-4 overall record.

How it happened

LSU-Alexandria used a 15-run second inning to break open what had been a back-and-forth start, overcoming an early five-run first inning by the Trojans.

The Generals struck first in the top of the first frame on a two-run home run by Cade LaBruyere for a 2-0 lead.

Dakota State answered immediately in the bottom half. Connor Raney and Aidan Perry reached to set the table for Cameron Haller, who blasted a three-run homer to put the Trojans ahead 3-2.

Two batters later, George Hogan added a two-run home run, giving DSU a 5-2 advantage after one inning.

The momentum swung dramatically in the second inning. LSU-Alexandria capitalized on hit batters, catcher's interference calls and timely extra-base hits to plate 14 runs on seven hits. Fischer Einkauf delivered two doubles in the inning, driving in four runs, while Trevor Dooley and LaBruyere each added key RBI knocks as LSU-Alexandria surged to a 17-5 lead.

LSU-A added three more runs in the third inning on home runs by Lane Kratzer and Dooley to stretch the margin to 19-5.

Dakota State continued to battle offensively:
  • In the third, Cameron DeMaria scored on a balk and Hunter Den Boer lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 19-7.
  • In the fourth, DeMaria singled home Raney.
  • In the fifth, H. Boer scored on LSU-A's wild pitch.
  • In the sixth, DeMaria singled to center to plate Perry.
LSU Alexandria added a run in the seventh for the 21-10 final.

Dakota State collected 11 hits in the contest. The Trojans drew five walks and struck out 10 times. Two defensive errors led to unearned runs.

The visitors drove in 20 runs and left just five runners on base.
