MADISON, S.D. — Dakota State (S.D.) matched Hastings (Neb.) in total shots Saturday afternoon, but the Broncos capitalized on a pair of scoring opportunities to earn a 2-0 women's soccer victory at Dan Beacom Track & Field.
The match was the 2026 season and home opener for the Trojans. Dakota State fell to 0-1 overall, while Hastings opened its season at 1-0. The Broncos were the preseason coaches' pick to win the Great Plains Athletic Conference title and received votes in the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll.
Both teams finished with 11 shots in the match. Dakota State placed six of its 11 shots on goal, while Hastings registered five shots on goal. The Broncos held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
How it happened
Hastings generated the first scoring threat of the match, producing three corner kicks during the opening six minutes. Dakota State goalkeeper
Ivey Winckler kept the Broncos off the scoreboard with saves on shots by Lois Taylor and Avery Higgins.
The Trojans produced their first shot in the 21
st minute when
Nichole Corona's attempt went wide.
Onika Kline followed with Dakota State's first shot on goal at the 22:26 mark, but Hastings' goalkeeper Autumn Button made the save.
Hastings broke the scoreless tie in the 30
th minute. Madison Rhodes scored at the 29:29 mark off an assist from Ella Christen, giving the Broncos a 1-0 advantage. Dakota State attempted four shots during the opening half, while Hastings finished with five. The Broncos carried their one-goal lead into halftime.
The Trojans increased their offensive pressure after halftime and generated seven shots in the final 45 minutes.
Ryelynn Hammer recorded Dakota State's first shot of the second half in the 57
th minute, forcing Hastings' second-half goalkeeper Tatiana Villasenor to make a save. Hammer added two more attempts later in the half.
Summer-Lily Robinson put a header on goal in the 64
th minute, followed by shots on goal from
Kirsten Piskorski and
Madison Smalley. Corona also forced Villasenor to make a save in the 72
nd minute as Dakota State searched for the equalizer.
Hastings extended its lead in the 78
th minute. Rhodes struck again at the 77:01 mark, scoring her second goal of the contest on an assist from Nyxon Milliron for a 2-0 Broncos advantage.
Rhodes accounted for both Hastings goals and finished with a match-high five shots, including two on goal. Taylor added two shots on goal, while Higgins had one shot on goal. Rhodes' first goal was credited as the game-winner.
Hammer led Dakota State's offense with three shots, including one on goal. Kline and Corona each attempted two shots with one on goal. Smalley, Robinson and Piskorski each recorded one shot on goal, while
Katie Brown added one shot.
Dakota State had six different players register a shot on goal.
Winckler played all 90 minutes in goal for Dakota State, recording three saves while allowing two goals. She made two saves in the first half and one in the second half.
Hastings used two goalkeepers in the shutout. Button played the opening 45 minutes and made one save, while Villasenor played the second half and collected five saves.
