SEWARD, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) held Concordia (Neb.) scoreless through the first 60 minutes Saturday afternoon, but the Bulldogs struck twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 non-conference women's soccer victory at Bulldog Stadium.
The Trojans fell to 0-6-0 overall. Concordia improved to 1-2-2 overall record. The match was scoreless at halftime before the Bulldogs scored both of their goals during a span of less than 12 minutes in the second half.
How it happened
Concordia controlled most of the offensive possession during the opening 45 minutes, producing seven shots compared to one by Dakota State. The Trojans, however, kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs recorded the first shot of the match in the 12th minute and followed with another attempt in the 21st minute.
Dakota State generated its first scoring opportunity in the 31st minute.
Madison Smalley placed a shot on goal, but Concordia goalkeeper Aaliyah Matthews made the save to preserve the scoreless tie.
Concordia continued to apply pressure late in the half. Molli Kalsbeck produced the Bulldogs' best scoring opportunity with 29 seconds remaining, but DSU goalkeeper
Ivey Winckler stopped the shot.
The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.
Dakota State created the first shot of the second half when
Katie Brown fired an attempt wide right in the 58th minute.
Concordia broke the scoreless tie at the 60:57 mark. Kalsbeck scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Abby Haynes, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans attempted to respond less than four minutes later.
Lea Jensen headed an attempt high in the 65th minute.
Concordia doubled its advantage at 72:34. Kyana Rios recorded her first goal of the season, with Guadalupe Sanchez providing the assist, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 2-0.
Dakota State earned its lone corner kick of the match in the 74th minute, taken by
Hannah Hint, but the Trojans were unable to convert the opportunity.
The Bulldogs maintained their two-goal advantage for the remainder of the match to secure the victory.
Inside the box score
Concordia outshot Dakota State 12-3 overall and held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs recorded seven shots in the opening half and five in the second half, while the Trojans registered one shot before halftime and two afterward.
Smalley recorded Dakota State's lone shot on goal. Brown and Jensen each added one shot for the Trojans.
Winckler played all 90 minutes in goal for Dakota State, recording two saves while allowing two goals.
Kalsbeck paced Concordia with three shots, including two on goal, and scored the eventual game-winning goal. Rios added two shots and a goal, while Addie Snyder finished with two shots and one shot on goal.
The Bulldogs held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Concordia was whistled for seven fouls compared to four by Dakota State. The Bulldogs were also called offside five times, while the Trojans did not have an offside violation.
Matthews played the first 72 minutes, 53 seconds in goal for Concordia and recorded one save. Grady Smith finished the final 17:07 as the Bulldogs combined for the shutout.
