COLUMBIA, Mo. – NAIA's nationally ranked No. 17 Columbia (Mo.) scored three times in the opening half and added four goals after halftime Thursday afternoon, defeating Dakota State (S.D.) 7-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match at Marvin Owens Field.
The Trojans fell to 0-8-1 overall, while the Cougars improved to 6-1-3. The Trojans made their first stop of the three members from the American Midwest Conference.
How it happened
Dakota State generated the first shot of the match just 34 seconds after kickoff when
Lea Jensen's attempt sailed wide right. Columbia responded with the opening goal in the fourth minute as Georgia Pardalos found the net at the 3:55 mark.
Ella Bredensteiner extended Columbia's advantage to 2-0 in the 13th minute, assisted by Brooke Williams and the Cougar team. Ayanna Clarke added an unassisted goal at 32:24 to give the hosts a 3-0 halftime advantage.
The Trojans put together a pair of quality scoring opportunities late in the first half.
Nichole Corona placed a shot on goal in the 40th minute, followed by
Aislyn Holden's shot on target at 43:48. Both attempts were stopped by Columbia goalkeeper Charlie Williams. Dakota State also earned two corner kicks during the closing minutes of the half.
Columbia increased its lead to 4-0 early in the second half when Pardalos scored her second goal of the match at 48:34. Bredensteiner followed with her second goal at 59:39 before Rowyn Blanke scored just 10 seconds later for a 6-0 advantage.
Blanke completed the scoring at 70:11 with her second goal of the contest, assisted by Madison Lieberoff.
Dakota State continued to create chances despite the deficit.
Kirsten Piskorski put a shot on goal in the 60th minute, while
Onika Kline forced another save in the 80th minute.
Samantha Bonar and Corona also registered shots during the final nine minutes.
Inside the box score
Columbia finished with a 33-7 advantage in total shots and a 17-4 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dakota State committed four fouls compared with three by Columbia.
Corona led Dakota State with two shots, including one on goal. Kline, Piskorski and Holden each registered a shot on goal. Jensen, Bonar and Piskorski each recorded one shot, while the Trojan goalkeeping unit collected 10 saves.
Pardalos, Bredensteiner and Blanke each scored twice for Columbia. Bredensteiner added an assist, while Blanke also contributed an assist. The Cougars received their other goal from Clarke.
