Lancers hand Trojans first softball setback in PC Dome Classic

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) held a 3-2 lead over Dakota State (S.D.) after two innings in the second game of the PC Dome Classic on the first day of the tournament.  The Lancers outscored the Trojans 11-1 in the final three innings to roll to a 14-3 victory in five innings.

Both Dakota State and Mount Marty went 1-1 after the first day of the tournament.

DSU wraps up the PC Dome Classic Saturday with another pair of games against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Trojans take on No. 20 ranked Morningside (Iowa) at 10 a.m. and play Mount Marty for the second meeting at 12 p.m.

Mount Marty (S.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL/5 innings

  • The Lancers plated three runs in the top first inning to open a 3-0 lead.  Emma Burns led off with a double.  She swiped to third base.  Janeah Castro reached on base by a walk.
  • Karlee Arnold drilled an RBI double to score Burns for MMU 1-0 lead (Castro advanced to third).
  • Kelly Amezcua produced an RBI ground out to score Castro as the Lancers increased its lead to 2-0. 
  • Abigail Page followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Arnold for Mount Marty 3-0 lead in the top first frame.
  • The Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning.  Sarah Torres reached on base by MMU's defensive error with one out. 
  • Michelle Evdos followed up with a single and advanced Torres to third base for DSU in the bottom first.  Xotchil Lopez produced an RBI single to score Torres, trailing 3-1 to the Lancers (Evdos advanced to third base).
  • Lia Chan drilled an RBI double to score Lopez as the Trojans cut the Lancers' lead to 3-2 in the bottom first.
  • DSU was unable to tie the game in the bottom first as Lopez was tagged out at home after Mackenzie Sims' fielder choice.
  • The Lancers opened the third frame with back-to-back hits by Castro and Arnold.  Abigail Page hit an RBI single to score Castro to extend their lead to 4-2. 
  • Mount Marty made it 5-2 caused by DSU's defensive error on the next play in the top third.
  • MMU plated five runs in the top fourth inning, highlighted by Burns' 3-run home run and Page's 2-RBI double for 10-2 lead.
  • The Lancers' lead grew to 14-2 in the top fifth frame after scoring four runs (Castro's 2-RBI double, Amezcua's RBI double, and Page's RBI ground out).
  • Chan added an RBI single in the bottom fifth frame to complete the final score.  The Trojans left the bases full when the game ended.
  • Chan was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and tallied two RBIs for Dakota State.  Lopez added two singles and an RBI.  Elizabeth Whitesides and Torres each added a single.
  • Whitesides and Evdos each swiped one base for the DSU.
  • Mount Marty hit seven doubles in the game, with a pair of doubles from Castro and Arnold.  Burns had a home run, double, single and tallied three RBIs.  Page had a double, single, and drove in a game-high five runs.
  • MMU recorded 13 hits in the game compared to the Trojans eight hits.
  • Lopez (L, 0-1) took the setback in the pitching circle, tossing three innings for Dakota State.  She allowed eight runs on eight hits.  Rosie Philop worked for two innings in relief, giving up six runs (one unearned) on five hits. 
  • McKenzie Gray pitched a complete game victory for Mount Marty.  She allowed three runs (one unearned) on eight hits and recorded four strikeouts.
