Trojans fall to No. 20 Morningside (Iowa) 7-2 in PC Dome Classic

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota State University Trojan softball team faced the NAIA's nationally-ranked opponent from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Morningside (Iowa) Saturday morning on the second day of the PC Dome Classic.  The Mustangs opened a 4-0 lead after two innings and held off the Trojans by the score of 7-2.

(20) Morningside (Iowa) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

  • Both teams were unable to score in the first inning.
  • The Mustangs poured in four runs in the bottom half of the second fame to earn the first lead of the game.  Breanna Tjebben led off with a walk, followed by Taylor Richter's single to advance Tjebben to second base. 
  • With one out, Sydney Struve reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for Morningside.  Ellie Cropley hit an RBI single to score Tjebben for MC 1-0 lead.  On the same play, the Mustangs added two more runs caused by DSU's defensive error to extend Mustangs' lead to 3-0.
  • Sydney Petersen produced an RBI single to score Cropley as Morningside's lead grew to 4-0.
  • Lexie Stolen highlighted the bottom third inning with a lead-off triple.  After Tjebben's single to advance Stolen to third base, Taylor Richter produced an RBI ground out to score Stolen to make it 5-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
  • Dakota State snapped its scoring drought with back-to-back doubles by Michelle Evdos and Xotchil Lopez in the top fourth inning.  Lopez produced an RBI to score Evdos as the Trojans trailed 5-1.
  • With two outs, Madison Aldendifer hit an RBI double to score Lopez as DSU trimmed MC's lead to 5-2 in the top fourth.
  • The Mustangs answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, thanks to Stolen's 2-RBI double for 7-2 lead.
  • Both teams were unable to convert their scoring chances in the final two-and-half innings, securing the victory for MC.
  • Evdos powered the Trojans' offense with two doubles.  Lopez added a double and RBI.  Aldendifer went 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI.  Mackenzie Sims added a single and a stolen base. 
  • Sarah Torres tallied two singles for the Dakota State.
  • Stolen was 2-of-3 at the plate with two doubles and drove in two runs for Morningside.  Petersen added a double, two singles, and an RBI.  Cropley tallied a single and collected three RBIs.  Tjebben, Richter, and Struve each had a hit.
  • MC outhit DSU 10-8.
  • Rosie Philop (L, 0-1) took the loss after working for two innings for Dakota State.  She worked for two innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on five hits.  Lopez tossed four innings in relief, giving up three runs on five hits.
  • Katherine Wurtz earned the victory after pitching four innings for Morningside.  She allowed two runs on six hits and recorded four strikeouts.  Mia Barozzo tossed three scoreless innings in relief, yielding the Trojans to two hits.  She had three strikeouts.
