Lakers' seven-run second inning propels to 11-2 win over Trojans

TUCSON, Ariz. – Roosevelt (Ill.) exploded for seven runs in the top second inning to fuel to an 11-2 in six innings over Dakota State (S.D.) on the second day of the Tucson (Ariz.) softball tournament.  The tournament is being held at Kino Sports Complex.

DSU fell to 1-6 overall record.  Roosevelt, a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), improved to 7-6 overall record.

The Trojans take on another CCAC opponent in their second meeting of the season, St. Francis (Ill.) at 1:15 p.m. (CT).

Roosevelt (Ill.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/6 innings

  • Both teams did not score in the first inning.
  • Brynn Dvoracek ignited the Lakers' seven-run second inning explosion with a lead-off double.  The next two batters reached safely on base, while Dvoracek scored on DSU's wild pitch to give Roosevelt a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lakers continued its scoring surge, adding six more runs capped by a 2-run home run by Athena Pomele-Pen for a 7-0 lead.
  • The Trojans plated two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Rosie Philop reached on base by an error committed by Roosevelt.   
  • Mackenzie Sims followed up with a 2-run home run as the Trojans trailed 7-2 in the bottom fourth.
  • Hailey Denton hit an RBI single to extend Lakers' lead to 8-2 in the top fifth inning.
  • Roosevelt scored three runs in the top sixth inning to widen their lead to 11-2 after an RBI walk by Kassie Kwaka.
  • Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom sixth as the Lakers secured the victory.
  • Michelle Evdos was 2-of-2 at the plate with a double and single with a walk for the Trojans.  Sarah Torres added a double. 
  • Philop was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and a run scored for DSU.  Sims hit a home run and drove in two runs.  Rebecca Hazlett drilled a triple.
  • Jessica Schnedier, Brielle Carre, Sabrina Treccani, and Denton each tallied two hits for Roosevelt.  Pomele-Pen smashed a home run and drove in three runs.  Kawka collected two RBIs and reached on base by a walk three times.
  • The Lakers outhit the Trojans 11-7 in the game.  DSU committed eight defensive errors while RC committed one error.
  • Madison Aldendifer (L, 1-3) took the loss after tossing two-plus innings, giving up seven runs (five unearned) on five hits.  Philop worked for 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, limiting the Lakers to one hit.  Sophia VandenBosch worked for 2 2/3 innings, allowing four unearned runs on five hits.
  • Kaylee Ramirez tossed 3 2/3 innings for Roosevelt, giving up two runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Kate Sisson (W, 5-0) earned the victory after pitching two scoreless innings and gave up two hits.  Samantha Norman pitched the final out.
