(RV) Red Raiders hand Trojans 9-4 defeat in Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) got behind early in the game Monday on the third day of Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational to Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference at Kino Sports Complex.  The Red Raiders stormed to a 6-0 lead and defeated the Trojans 9-4.

Dakota State fell to 1-8 overall record.  Northwestern, receiving votes in the first edition of NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 20-3.  Both teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Thue Complex in late April.

DSU concludes the tournament Tuesday with two games scheduled.  The Trojans face Hastings (Neb.) in the first game and wrap up the invitational against NCAA Division III California Lutheran.

(RV) Northwestern (Iowa) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL   

  • The Red Raiders kicked off the inning with a bases loaded situation after the first two batters (Jennifer Boeve and Jordyn Kramer) reached on base by DSU's defensive error, followed by a walk by Bri Giordano.
  • Gwen Mikkelson drilled a base-clearing 3-RBIs to score Boeve, Kramer, and Giordano to give NWIA a 3-0 lead.
  • Emily Strasser added an RBI single to score Mikkelson to extend the Red Raiders' lead to 4-0.
  • Northwestern added two more runs to widen their lead to 6-0 in the top first frame.
  • Mackenzie Sims blasted a solo home run with one out in the bottom half of the first inning as DSU trailed 6-1.  It was her third home run this season.
  • Kramer led off the top second inning with a single for Northwestern.  She advanced to second after Giordano's sacrifice bunt.
  • Kameryn Etherington hit an RBI single to score Kramer to make it 7-1 in favor of the Red Raiders in the top second.
  • Northwestern made it 8-1 in the top fourth inning caused by DSU's defensive miscue.
  • Lia Chan drilled a double with one out in the bottom fourth for the Trojans.  Madissen Larson reached on base by a walk with two outs (Chan swiped to third base).
  • Larson stole for second base, allowing Chan to score home as DSU cut their deficit to 8-2 in the bottom fourth frame.
  • Dakota State added a run in the bottom sixth inning.  Michelle Evdos led off with a double.  Elizabeth Whitesides, pinch runner for Evdos, swiped to third base.
  • Larson reached on base by a walk with no out in the bottom sixth.  She was caught stealing and allowed Whitesides to score as DSU trimmed NWIA's lead to 8-3.
  • Mikkelson and Sydnee Isom kicked off the top seventh with back-to-back singles for the Red Raiders.  After a fly out by Strasser to advance Mikkelson and Isom both one base, Erika McKenney produced an RBI ground out to score Mikkelson as NWIA stretched its lead to 9-3.
  • Jacquelyn Folkers reached on base by an error caused by the Red Raiders and advanced to second base.  Sims hit a ground out to advance Folkers to third base.
  • Dakota State trailed 9-4 after NWIA committed a passed ball to score Folkers in the bottom seventh.
  • The Trojans left two runners on base, despite a single by Evdos followed by a double by Larson.
  • NWIA collected eight hits in the game compared to the Trojans seven hits.  DSU left eight runners on base compared to the Red Raiders five runners left on base.
  • Evdos led the Trojans with a double and single.  Sims had a home run and an RBI.  Chan and Larson each recorded a double.  Larson reached on base by a walk two times.  Folkers and Rebecca Hazlett each had a walk.
  • Chan, Whitesides, and Larson each swiped one base for Dakota State.
  • Mikkelson was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and drove in four runs for the Red Raiders.  Strasser tallied two hits.  Boeve, Kramer, Etherington and Isom each had a hit.
  • Sophia VandenBosch (L, 0-1) recorded the defeat after working for two innings for DSU, giving up seven runs (three unearned) on four hits.  Rosie Philop tossed five innings in relief, allowing two runs (one unearned) on four this.
  • Etherington (W, 10-1) earned the victory in the pitching circle for NWIA.  She worked for four innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on three hits.  Isom pitched three innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits and issued four walks.
