TUCSON, Ariz. – A total of 30 runs and 37 hits combined by both Dakota State (S.D.) and Hastings were recorded on the final day of the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational at Kino Sports Complex. The Broncos held off the Trojans 21-8 in a high scoring softball affair Tuesday.
Dakota State fell to 1-9 overall record. Hastings, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 6-11 overall record.
The Trojans wrap up the tournament with a contest against NCAA Division III California Lutheran.
Hastings (Neb.) 21, Dakota State (S.D.) 8 – FINAL
- Julia Reimer reached on base by a walk with one out for Hastings to open the inning. Mattie Hogrefe drilled an RBI double to score Remier to earn an 1-0 lead in the top first.
- Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the bottom half of the first inning, despite getting doubles from Carrington Entringer and Michelle Evdos.
- The Trojans exploded for five runs in the bottom second inning, ignited by Mackenzie Sims' RBI triple to score Madison Aldendifer who led off with a single (DSU knotted the game at 1-1).
- Alexus Foster recorded a walk for DSU in the bottom second. She swiped to second base with one out (Sims remains at third base). Entringer hit a 2-RBI single to score Foster and Sims as the Trojans earned a 3-1 lead with two outs (Entringer advanced to second base after HC's error).
- Dakota State continued its scoring surge as Sarah Torres hit an RBI single to score Entringer, ballooning their lead to 4-1.
- After Evdos' single to advance Torres to second base, Xotchil Lopez hit an RBI single to score Torres as DSU widen their lead to 5-1 in the bottom second frame.
- The Broncos poured in four runs in the top third inning, highlighted by Lauren Schneider's 2-RBI double. Hastings tied the game at 5-5 after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans, allowing Schneider to score.
- Lia Chan was hit by pitch in the bottom third inning with one out. She swiped to second base. After Rosie Philop's ground out to advance Chan to third base, Entringer hit an RBI single to score Philop as DSU regained their lead at 6-5.
- Hastings exploded for five runs in the top fourth frame, thanks to Bailey French's 2-RBI double. The Broncos led 10-6 after four innings.
- Schneider added 2-RBI single followed by Taylor Stuhr's RBI single to widen HC's lead to 13-6 in the top fifth inning.
- Elana Gerhard and Ana Krueger each added an RBI single in the top sixth inning as Hastings' lead grew to 15-6.
- Dakota State snapped its scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom sixth. Entringer hit a single with one out and swiped to second base. Sarah Torres added a single.
- Evdos drilled an RBI double to score Entringer as the Trojans trailed 15-7 in the bottom sixth (Torres to third base). Lopez followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Torres to extend the game into the final inning, trailing 15-8.
- Hastings plated six runs in the final inning to complete the final score.
- Entringer was perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with a double, three singles, and drove in three runs for Dakota State. Evdos added two doubles, single and an RBI. Sims hit a triple, single, and collected an RBI.
- Lopez tallied two singles and two RBIs for DSU. Aldendifer and Hannah Feser each recorded a hit.
- Eight Hastings players registered multi-hits in the game, led by Schneider with four hits and tallied seven RBIs. Krueger added four hits and two singles.
- French had a double, single and drove in four runs for the Broncos. Stuhr had three hits and two RBIs.
- The Broncos outhit the Trojans 22-15 in the game.
- Aldendifer started the game in the pitching circle for DSU. She worked for 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. She registered two strikeouts. Philop (L, 0-3) took the loss after tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief. Sophia VandenBosch also pitched in relief.
- Hannah Norquest started the game and worked for 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits for the Broncos. Alexis Linnebach (W, 1-5) earned the victory after pitching 5 1/3 innings in relief. She allowed three runs on six hits.
