MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned home Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference softball doubleheader with Briar Cliff (Iowa) at Thue Field. The Trojans swept the Chargers for the first time since March 27, 2018, by the scores of 5-2 in the first game and 4-1 in a shortened contest due to lightning in the area.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 13-16, earning their eighth win in the last ten games. The Trojans also collected its most home victories at Thue Field more than 10 years ago (currently 8-4 record at Thue Field). Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, dropped to 17-14 overall record.
DSU resumes to North Star Athletic Association on the road for the second straight weekend. The Trojans travel to Viterbo (Wis.) in a four-game series at Viterbo Outdoor Activities Complex. The series begin with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. and concludes on Saturday with another doubleheader at 12 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Viterbo (Wis.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State plated two runs in the bottom third inning to grab the first lead of the game, thanks to a pair of triples. Carrington Entringer ignited a triple with one out. Madison Aldendifer produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Entringer to give DSU 1-0 lead.
- Michelle Evdos drilled an RBI triple to score Aldendifer to extend the Trojans' lead to 2-0 in the bottom third frame.
- Briar Cliff snapped their scoring drought with a run in the top fourth. Sydney Lierman and Kennedy Andersen led off with back-to-back singles. Aubrey Chichurka recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Lierman to third base and Andersen to second base.
- Georgia Krohn hit an RBI single to score Lierman as the Chargers trailed 2-1 in the top fourth with one out.
- BCU knotted the game with another run scored in the top fifth inning. Kylee Lukes reached on base by a walk with one out. Alexis Westercamp hit an RBI double to score Lukes as the Chargers tied the game at 1-1.
- Dakota State halted Briar Cliff's scoring chances with bases full as Chirchurka and Krohn both were struck out to end the top fifth inning.
- The Trojans poured in three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to regain their lead. Angela Slattery led off with a single. Evdos recorded a fielder's choice, while Slattery reached safely on second base caused by a defensive error by the Chargers.
- DSU's Mackenzie Sims followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation (Slattery on third base, Oliva Peterson on second base after pinch running for Evdos) in the bottom sixth.
- Hannah Feser recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch to score Slattery for DSU 3-2 lead in the bottom sixth.
- Xotchil Lopez, pinch hitter for Madissen Larson, hit a 2-out 2-RBI single to scored Peterson and Sims to balloon DSU's lead to 5-2 in the bottom sixth.
- Dakota State secured the victory after retiring the final three batters on ground outs in the top seventh inning.
- The Chargers outhit the Trojans 8-7 in the game. BCU left 10 runners on base compared to DSU four runners left on base.
- Entringer paced Dakota State's offense by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a triple, single and a run scored. Evdos added a triple and an RBI. Feser collected an RBI.
- Slattery, Sims, Lia Chan, and Lopez each tallied a single for the Trojans. Lopez recorded two RBIs.
- Westercamp had a double and an RBI for the Chargers. Lukes added two singles. Krohn tallied a single and an RBI. Karina Cupples, Callie Billings, Andersen, and LIerman each had a hit.
- Aldendifer started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She worked for 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Slattery (W, 6-4) earned the victory in relief, pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings. She collected five strikeouts.
- Kayla Guerrero pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for Briar Cliff. She gave up two runs on three hits. Krohn (L, 3-4) suffered the setback after tossing 3 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits and registered eight strikeouts.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Briar Cliff (Iowa) 1 – FINAL/5 innings
- Dakota State erased their 1-0 deficit and scored at least a run from second through fourth innings to secure the doubleheader sweep victory. The game was cut short before the start of the bottom fifth frame due to approaching storms and lightning in the area.
- BCU's Cupples kicked off the game with a single and advanced to second base after a wild pitch by DSU. Lukes followed up with a single to advance Cupples to third base.
- Lierman produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Cupples to give Briar Cliff a 1-0 lead in the top first.
- Dakota State could not convert their scoring opportunities in the bottom half of the first half, despite getting three hits from Sims (single), Lopez (double), and Entringer (single).
- Chan led the bottom second with a single for the Trojans. She advanced to second base after Aldendifer's sacrifice bunt. Chan advanced to third base after a wild pitch by the Chargers.
- Torres hit an RBI single to score Chan as DSU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom second inning.
- Dakota State scored another run in the bottom third inning. Entringer reached on base by a walk with two outs. Rosie Philop followed up with a single to advance Entringer to second base.
- The Trojans earned a 2-1 lead as Chan hit an RBI single to score Entringer in the bottom third.
- Dakota State produced two runs in the bottom fourth inning to widen their lead. Torres hit a single. Sims reached safely on base caused by BCU's defensive error (Torres advanced to third base, while Sims advanced to second base on the same play).
- Lopez recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Torres for 3-1 DSU lead in the bottom fourth (Sims advanced to third base).
- Dakota State ballooned their lead to 4-1 after Evdos' RBI single to score Sims.
- Briar Cliff left two runners on base when the top fifth inning ended. The game was called off due to lightning, securing the victory for Dakota State.
- DSU outhit BCU 9-7 in the game. The Chargers committed three defensive errors while the Trojans did not commit a defensive miscue. Both teams left seven runners on base.
- Chan and Torres each had two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Lopez added a double and an RBI. Sims, Entringer, and Philop each tallied a single.
- Lukes and Cupples each led Briar Cliff with two hits. Lierman had a single and an RBI. Westercamp and Brooke Masi each had a hit.
- Aldendifer (W, 5-4) earned the victory after pitching four innings for Dakota State. She yielded one run on five hits. Slattery (S, 1) earned the save in relief after tossing a scoreless fifth inning.
- Mackenna Raby pitched a scoreless first inning for the Chargers, despite giving up three hits. Morgan Jones (L, 4-4) took the loss in relief. She worked for 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Korhn pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits.
