La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) clinched their third straight North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series victory after earning a 12-7 victory in the first game Saturday at Viterbo (Wis.) Outdoor Activities Complex. The V-Hawks rallied back with six-run sixth inning in the series finale and held on to a 15-14 victory to earn the doubleheader split.
Dakota State had won three straight North Star Athletic Association four-game series for the first time in program history since the league formed in 2013-14. The Trojans are 16-17 overall record and 11-5 record in the NSAA conference, earning their 11th win in the last 14 games after Saturday's games. DSU's season-high six-game winning streak came to an end after the four-game series finale setback.
Viterbo is 4-28 overall record and earned their first win in the league this season at 1-15 record. Dakota State earned the four-game series victory over the V-Hawks for the second consecutive season.
Dakota State scored in double digits in all four games in the series with Viterbo, averaging 11.8 runs per game.
DSU continues their busy schedule on Monday as they play a non-conference doubleheader at Morningside (Iowa). The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. held at Jensen Softball Complex on the campus of Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 12, Viterbo (Wis.) 7 – FINAL
- Dakota State earned its first lead of the game in the opening inning, thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Mackenzie Sims and Rosie Philop. Sarah Torres reached safely on base by VU's defensive error to start the game.
- Sims hit a 2-out RBI double to score Torres to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Philop followed up with another RBI double to score Sims to extend their lead to 2-0.
- The Trojans continued its offensive outburst in the top second frame, producing four runs on five hits.
- Madison Aldendifer and Lia Chan sparked the top second inning with back-to-back singles for DSU. Both Aldendifer and Chan advanced one base after VU's passed ball. Elizabeth Whitesides drilled a 2-RBI double to score Aldendifer and Chan as the Trojans' lead grew to 4-0.
- Carrington Entringer followed up with an RBI double with one out to score Whitesides for 5-0 DSU lead in the top second. Sims produced a 2-out RBI single to score Entringer to make it 6-0 in favor of Dakota State.
- The V-Hawks ended their scoring drought in the bottom third frame with a pair of runs. With baes loaded situation, Amanda Bogdonoivich recorded an RBI walk followed by Morgan James' RBI sacrifice fly as VU trailed 6-2.
- Dakota State made it 7-2 in the top fourth inning after a lead-off home run by Torres. It was her first career home run at DSU.
- The Trojans added a run in the top fourth after Michelle Evdos hit a double. Sims reached safely on base caused by Viterbo's defensive miscue, allowing Evdos to score to make it 8-2 DSU.
- Delaney Ryan reached on base by a walk with one out in the bottom half of the fourth inning for the V-Hawks. She advanced to second base after Josie Reisch's ground out. Haleigh Zanoni hit an RBI double to score Ryan as the V-Hawks cut the Trojans' lead to 8-3.
- With bases loaded situation in the top fifth frame, Entringer hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Chan to make it 9-3 DSU.
- Evdos followed up with a 2-RBI double to score Whitesides and Torres as Dakota State ballooned their lead to 11-3 in the top fifth.
- The V-Hawks scored twice in the bottom fifth inning to extend the game into the sixth inning. Brittney Slocum led off with a walk, followed by Bogdonovich's double to advance Slocum to third base.
- Karissa Walsh produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Slocum as the V-Hawks trailed 11-4 in the bottom fifth. Jacky Mathews followed up with an RBI single to score Bogdonovich to reduce their deficit to 11-5.
- Evdos added an RBI single in the top seventh frame to increase DSU's lead to 12-5.
- VU's Walsh smashed a 2-run home run in the bottom seventh inning to round up the final score.
- Dakota State pounded out 16 hits in the game compared to Viterbo seven hits. The V-Hawks committed four defensive errors, while the Trojans did not commit a defensive miscue.
- Six DSU players collected multi-hits in the game, led by Evdos with three hits (two doubles, single) and drove in three runs. Torres had a home run, single and an RBI. Entringer recorded a double, single and two RBIs. Sims had two hits, two stolen bases, and three RBIs.
- Whitesides tallied three hits and two RBIs for Dakota State. Chan added two singles. Philop had a double and an RBI. Aldendifer recorded a hit.
- Walsh was 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single, and three RBIs for Viterbo. Bogdonovich, James, Mathews and Zanoni each had a hit and an RBI.
- Angela Slattery started the game in the pitching circle for DSU. She worked for three innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Aldendifer (W, 6-4) earned the victory in relief after tossing four innings. She gave up five runs (one unearned) on five hits.
- Ella Driebel (L, 1-11) tossed a complete game setback for VU. She allowed 12 runs (six unearned) on 16 hits.
Game 2 – Viterbo (Wis.) 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 14 – FINAL
- Viterbo produced six-run sixth inning production to erase their 13-9 deficit and held on to a 15-14 victory.
- The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning of the four-game series finale, thanks to Evdos' RBI single to score Torres (DSU led 1-0).
- Viterbo poured in five runs in the bottom first inning. Walsh hit a 2-RBI double, followed by Ryan's ground out RBI for a 3-1 lead.
- Emily Roberts and Zanoni each added RBI singles to extend VU's lead to 5-1 in the bottom first.
- Dakota State answered with six runs in the top second inning to regain their lead.
- Slattery led off the top second with a double and scored home caused by a pair of VU's defensive miscues. The Trojans trailed 5-2.
- Aldendifer reached safely on base by another VU's error followed by Chan's walk. Whitesides hit an RBI double to score Aldendifer as the Trojans trailed 5-3 in the top second (Chan advanced to third).
- With bases loaded situation after Entringer's walk, Evdos produced an RBI walk to score Chan as DSU trailed 5-4.
- Sims followed up with a 2-RBI single to score Whitesides and Entringer as DSU regained their lead to 6-5. Slattery wrapped up with an RBI single to score Evdos to make it 7-5 in favor of the Trojans.
- Dakota State used another offensive explosion in the top third inning, producing five runs. With bases loaded situation and one out, Evdos hit a 2-RBI single to score Whitesides and Torres to balloon DSU's lead to 9-5.
- DSU made it 10-5 as Sims followed up with an RBI single to score Entringer in the top third inning. Slattery added an RBI fielder's choice, while Sims stole home to make it 12-5 in favor of the Trojans.
- Viterbo plated three runs in the bottom third inning, capped by James' RBI single to trim Dakota State's lead to 12-8.
- The V-Hawks reduced their deficit to 12-9 in the bottom fourth after Zanoni's RBI single.
- Sims blasted a triple with two outs in the top fifth frame for the Trojans. Philop followed up with an RBI single to score Sims as DSU's lead grew to 13-9.
- Viterbo stormed back in the bottom half of the sixth inning with six-run, capped by a two-out two-run home run by James to earn a 15-13 lead. Driebel had an RBI double, followed by Bogdonovich's RBI single, Slocum's RBI ground out before James' 2-run home run.
- Evdos smashed a solo home run with one out in the top seventh inning as the Trojans trailed 15-14. It was her third home run this season for DSU.
- Dakota State was unable to add more runs as Viterbo held on to a slim victory.
- A total of 29 runs, 27 hits, and 11 defensive errors combined by both teams were registered. The Trojans outhit the V-Hawks 14-13 in the game. DSU committed six defensive errors compared to VU five defensive errors.
- Evdos fueled the Trojans' offense with a home run, two singles and drove in a game-high five runs. Sims added a triple, two singles, and collected three RBIs. Slattery had a double, single, swiped two bases, and two RBIs.
- Whitesides tallied three hits and an RBI for Dakota State. Chan, Entringer, and Philop each had a hit.
- James led the V-Hawks with three hits, including a home run, two singles, and drove in three runs. Zanoni had two hits and three RBIs. Walsh and Driebel each had a double and two RBIs. Mathews had two hits. Roberts recorded two hits and an RBI.
- DSU's Slattery started the game and worked for two innings. She gave up five runs (one unearned) on five hits. Philop tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on five hits. Aldendifer (L, 6-5) recorded the setback after pitching 1 1/3 innings in relief. She allowed six runs (five unearned) on three hits.
- Ryan pitched the first two innings in the pitching circle for VU. She gave up seven runs (three unearned) on six hits. Driebel worked for one out, despite giving up five runs on four hits. Bogdonovich (W, 1-2) earned the victory after pitching 4 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed two runs on four hits.
