Trojans fall short to NSAA's softball leader (RV) Bellevue (Neb.)

OMAHA, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) fell short to the North Star Athletic Association's softball leader Bellevue (Neb.) Wednesday in a doubleheader at Roy Smith Field.  The Trojans jumped to an early lead before the Bruins scored eight straight runs to earn an 8-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.  BU rallied back from a 4-2 deficit in the second game, earning a 5-4 extra-inning victory over DSU.

Dakota State fell to 16-21 overall record and 11-7 record in the league.  Bellevue, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, extended their winning streak to six games and raised their overall record to 30-11 and 16-2 NSAA conference record.

Both teams play another doubleheader Thursday afternoon, switching sites to Madison, S.D.  The doubleheader kicks off at 3 p.m. at Thue Field.

Game 1 – (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning in the first game of the doubleheader.  The Trojans were unable to score for the rest of the game as the Bruins scored seven unanswered runs to break a 1-1 tie into an 8-1 victory.
  • Sarah Torres led off the game with a single for DSU.  She advanced to second base after Carrington Entringer's sacrifice bunt. 
  • Xotchil Lopez produced an RBI single to score Torres to give Trojans a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top first frame.
  • Bellevue answered with a run in the bottom half of the first inning.  Reese Floro led off with a walk and advanced to second base on DSU's wild pitch.  She advanced to third base after another wild pitch committed by the Trojans.
  • Lauren Jurek hit an RBI ground out to score Floro as the Bruins knotted the game at 1-1.
  • Jurek added a 2-RBI double in the bottom third inning to extend BU's lead to 3-1.
  • Liana McMurtry reached on base by a walk with two outs in the bottom fifth.  Jurek drilled an RBI double to score McMurtry to balloon the Bruins' lead to 4-1.
  • Bellevue poured in four runs in the bottom sixth inning, sparked by Allison O'Driscoll's lead off home run and capped by McMurtry's 2-RBI triple to make it 8-1.
  • Lopez was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for Dakota State.  Torres, Entringer, Michelle Evdos, Angela Slattery, and Jacquelyn Folkers each added a single.
  • Jurek fueled the Bruins' offense attack with two doubles and drove in four runs.  Katie Cunningham and Sami Reding each added two hits.  McMurtry hit a triple and collected two RBIs.
  • Bellevue outhit Dakota State 10-7 in the game.  The Trojans left five runners on base compared to the Bruins three runners left on base.
  • Slattery (L, 7-6) recorded the setback in the pitching circle for DSU.  She worked for 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.  Madison Aldendifer pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief.
  • Cunningham (W, 10-6) earned a complete game victory for BU.  She yielded one run on seven hits and registered seven strikeouts.

Game 2 – (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL/8 innings

  • Despite trailing 2-0 in the second game of the doubleheader, Dakota State scored four runs from the third through fifth innings to earn a 4-2 lead.  The Bruins answered back with a run scored in the sixth and seventh innings to force the game into extra inning.
  • BU scored a run with two outs in the bottom eighth inning to secure the doubleheader sweep over DSU.
  • Floro led off the Bruins with a double in the bottom first.  She advanced to third base after a wild pitch by the Trojans.  Ashley Young reached on base by a walk with two outs.
  • DSU committed another wild pitch to allow Floro to score for BU 1-0 lead in the bottom first (Young advanced to second base).  O'Driscoll followed up with an RBI single to score Young to extend the Bruins' lead to 2-0.
  • Dakota State snapped its scoring drought with a lead-off home run by Torres in the top third, trailing 2-1.  It was her second home run this season.
  • Mackenzie Sims led off the top fourth frame with a double for DSU.  She advanced to third base after Aldendifer's sacrifice bunt.
  • Rosie Philop hit an RBI single with two outs to score Sims as the Trojans tied the game at 2-2 in the top fourth inning.
  • Entringer led off the top fifth frame with a walk for DSU.  Evdos blasted a 2-run home run as the Trojans earned a 4-2 lead with no outs in the top fifth inning.  It was Evdos' fourth home run of the season. 
  • Young hit a lead-off solo home run in the bottom sixth inning as the Bruins trimmed the Trojans' lead to 4-3.
  • Emily Rochford added another lead-off home run in the bottom seventh inning as Bellevue tied the game at 4-4.  The Bruins were unable convert their scoring chances after leaving two runners on base, extending the game into extra innings.
  • Dakota State opened the top eight inning with a walk by Lia Chan.  She advanced to second base after Philop's ground out.  Entringer added a single with two outs and advanced Chan to third base.
  • Bellevue prevented DSU to score, leaving two runners on base when the top eighth inning ended.
  • O'Driscoll led off bottom eighth inning with a double for BU.  Cunningham was hit by pitch with one out, while Rochford struck out swinging for the second out.
  • Alexa Sidel, pinch runner for O'Driscoll, and Cunningham advanced one base after a wild pitch by the Trojans.  Reding hit a walk-off RBI single to score Sidel for BU's 5-4 victory.
  • Dakota State outhit Bellevue 9-8 in the game.  Both teams committed one defensive error.  DSU left 11 runners on base compared to BU six runners left on base.
  • Torres was 2-of-5 at the plate with a home run, single, and an RBI for the Trojans.  Evdos extended her hitting streak to 11 games after hitting a home run and collected two RBIs.  Philop tallied a double and single Entringer and Sims each had a hit.
  • O'Driscoll led the Bruins with a double, single, and an RBI.  Young and Rochford each added a solo home and an RBI.  Reding had two singles and an RBI.  Floro and Maricela Egan each recorded a single.
  • Slattery tossed six-plus innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She allowed four runs on six hits.  Philop (L, 1-4) recorded the defeat after working 1 2/3 innings in relief.  She gave up a run on two hits.
  • Jurek started the game and worked for four-plus innings for Bellevue, giving up four runs on six hits.  Rochford pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, yielding the Trojans to two hits.  Cunningham (W, 11-6) earned her second win of the day after limiting DSU to one hit in 2 1/3 innings.
