Trojans roar back for 9-8 softball Senior Day walk-off victory over Blue Hawks

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) stormed back from 8-1 deficit after two-and-half innings to Dickinson State (N.D.) Sunday afternoon in the North Star Athletic Association softball action at Thue Field.  The Trojans rallied back with three runs in the bottom third, four runs in the bottom fifth inning, and earned a walk-off victory as Elizabeth Whitesides scored on a wild pitch for a 9-8 Senior Day thrilling victory.

The victory also gave the Trojans its 10th home victory this season at Thue Field (10-7 record at home), the most home victories in more than 15 years.  In addition, it was the first time in program history that Dakota State earned their second win in the same NSAA series with Dickinson State, as well as first series victory over the Blue Hawks.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 18-24 and matched its program history 13th North Star conference victory (2018 when the Trojans went 13-15 record in North Star contests).  The Trojans are 13-10 record in this year's North Star conference games.  The Blue Hawks fell to 17-23 overall record and 9-9 record in the league.

DaSU honored their five seniors after the completion of the 2022 softball home finale.  The five seniors included Carrington Entringer, Madison Aldendifer, Whitesides, Sarah Torres, and Lia Chan.  The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to poor weather conditions.

Dakota State plays its final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, visiting Dordt (Iowa).  The first game of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. at Open Space Park on Dordt campus in Sioux Center, Iowa.

  • Rhea Paiva kicked off the game with a single for Dickinson State.  She advanced to third base after Ari Martinez hit a fly out to right field with two outs. 
  • The Blue Hawks earned the first lead of the game at 1-0 after Katelyn Kubitschek hit an RBI single to score Paiva.
  • Entringer smashed a lead-off triple to start the bottom second for Dakota State.  Aldendifer reached safely on base after an RBI sacrifice bunt with an error and scored Entringer, tying the game at 1-1.
  • DiSU exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the top third inning to regain their lead.  Dallis Mitchell hit a single with one out.  Martinez followed up with an RBI double to score Mitchell for 2-1 DiSU lead.
  • Dickinson State continued its scoring surge as Kubitschek hit an RBI single to score Olivia Hanke, pinch runner for Martinez.  Emma Woodworth drilled an RBI double to score Kubitschek as the Blue Hawks ballooned their lead to 4-1.
  • The Blue Hawks set up a bases loaded situation when Kamryn Kuntz reached on base by a walk followed by Kennedy Kuntz' single (Woodworth advanced to third base).
  • Dickinson State stretched its lead to 6-1 as Kara Conway hit an RBI single to score Woodworth, followed by Emilie Sickler's RBI hit-by-pitch to score Ka. Kuntz in the top third inning.
  • Mitchel hit a 2-out RBI single to score Ke. Kuntz followed by Martinez's RBI walk as the Blue Hawks' lead grew to 8-1 in the top third.
  • Dakota State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  Mackenzie Sims reached safely on base by DiSU's defensive error.  Michelle Evdos followed up with a walk to advance Sims to second base.
  • Entringer hit an RBI single to score Sims with one out as the Trojans trailed 8-2 (Evdos advanced to second base) in the bottom third.
  • With Aldendifer on first base and Entringer on second base, Chan blasted a 3-run home run as Dakota State trimmed Dickinson State's lead to 8-5 with two outs in the bottom third.  It was Chan's fifth home run this season.
  • The Trojans plated three runs in the bottom fifth inning as they rallied back to knot the game for the second time.  Alexus Foster led off with a walk.  Torres hit a single to advance Foster to second base with one out.  Sims recorded a fielder's choice on the next at-bat as Foster was out at third base.
  • Evdos hit an RBI single to score Torres with two outs as the Trojans trailed 8-6.  After Evdos swiped to second bae, Xotchil Lopez hit a 2-RBI single to score Sims and Evdos to tie the game at 8-8.
  • DiSU's Ke. Kuntz started the top seventh by reaching safely on base caused by Trojans' defensive miscue.  She advanced to second base after a wild pitch by Dakota State.
  • Conway recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Ke. Kuntz to third base for the Blue Hawks.  The Trojans prevented Dickinson State to score as Sickler used a bunt, while Ke. Kuntz was tagged out at home.
  • Dickinson State was unable to score in the top seventh inning.
  • Whitesides started the bottom seventh frame by reaching safely on base caused by Blue Hawks' defensive error.  Torres followed up with a single to advance Whitesides to third base.  Torres swiped to second base.
  • A wild pitch committed by the Blue Hawks allowed Whitesides score at home, earning a thrilling victory for Dakota State on Senior Day with no outs.
  • Both teams registered 12 hits in the game.  The Blue Hawks committed five defensive errors compared to the Trojans one miscue.  DaSU left nine runners on base compared to DiSU eight runners left on base.
  • Torres was 3-of-5 at the plate with a run scored and swiped one base for Dakota State.  Entringer added a triple, single, RBI, and scored twice.  Evdos was 2-of-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk.  Foster had two singles and a walk.  Chan hit a home run and earned a game-high three RBIs.
  • Lopez recorded a hit and collected two RBIs for the Trojans.  Aldendifer had a hit and an RBI.  Whitesides had a walk and a run scored.
  • Kubitschek had two hits and two RBIs for Dickinson State.  Paiva, Ke. Kuntz, and Mitchell each had two hits.  Martinez had a double and two RBIs.  Woodworth had a double and an RBI.  Conway recorded a single and an RBI.
  • Angela Slattery started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She worked for 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits.  Rosie Philop tossed one inning in relief, allowing three runs on four hits.  Aldendifer (W, 7-6) earned the victory after pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, yielding the Blue Hawks to just one hit.
  • Mitchel pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (one unearned) on 11 hits.  Martinez (L, 9-11) recorded the setback in relief, despite allowing an unearned run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.
