DSU football seeks for first win of the season at Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday

Week 5 Preview
MADISON, S.D.—The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan football team (0-4 overall record, 0-2 North Star Athletic Association record) returns to action Saturday afternoon after taking a bye week in the North Star Athletic Association.  The Trojans begin their two-game road trip, journeying to Jerome Berg Field (330 3rd Street NE) to take on Mayville State (N.D.) (0-5 overall record, 0-3 NSAA conference record).  Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. in Mayville, N.D.

Dakota State fell short in the Trojan Day homecoming contest on Sept. 16 at Dan Beacom Track Complex.  Valley City State (N.D.) held off DSU's late comeback in the game, holding on to a 14-6 victory in a defensive battle by both teams.

Mayville State was held winless after dropping a heartbreaker on the road at Valley City State on Sept. 23.  The Vikings rallied late in the game to knot the game and forced overtime.  After each team scored in the first overtime, the Vikings took a 24-21 lead in the second overtime and halted the Comets' fourth-and-3 situation in the red zone for a thrilling victory.
 
Dakota State and Mayville State will be meeting for their 36th meeting on Saturday.

Next Up:  Dakota State stays on the road next Saturday (Oct. 8) as they visit the North Star's defending champion Dickinson State (N.D.).  Kick-off from Dickinson, N.D. is set for 2 p.m. (Central Time)/1 p.m. (Mountain Time).

Week 5 Quick Hits
+ Dakota State (S.D.) is seeking for their first win this season.  The last victory came on Nov. 12, 2022, when the Trojans closed out the Trojan Field era with a 13-0 shutout victory over Waldorf (Iowa).
+ The Trojans had won the previous eight meetings with Mayville State (N.D.), with the most recent on Oct. 22, 2022, in Mayville, N.D. by the score of 38-24.  DSU roared back with a 24-0 fourth quarter surge to secure the victory.
+ DSU had won the last six games played at Jerome Berg Field since 2015, including four straight meetings from 2017 through 2020.  The Trojans had scored more than 28 points during their winning streak played at Mayville State.
+ Dakota State and Mayville State will be meeting for their second North Star Athletic Association meeting on Nov. 4 at Dan Beacom Track Complex in Madison, S.D..
+ The Trojans close their first half portion of the North Star Athletic Association schedule next Saturday at Dickinson State (N.D.).  After next Saturday's game, Dakota State have one road game remaining on their 2023 schedule at Valley City State (N.D.) on Oct. 21.
+ The Dakota State University Trojan football developmental team earned their first win of the season with a 34-14 victory over Minnesota State Community & Technical College on Sept. 24 at Dan Beacom Track Complex.  The Trojans are slated to travel at Morningside (Iowa) on Sunday with a 4 p.m. kickoff and close the 2023 season on Oct. 15 at Mount Marty (S.D.) with a 3 p.m. kick-off.
 
The Series (36th meeting - Dakota State leads series 21-14)
Last Meeting—Oct. 22, 2022, Jerome Berg Field, Mayville, N.D.
—Dakota State (S.D.) erased a 24-14 deficit after three quarters, erupting for 24 fourth-quarter points to earn a 38-24 victory over Mayville State (N.D.).  It was DSU's sixth straight victory at Jerome Berg Field.

The Comets jumped to a 14-0 lead through the late second quarter.  The Trojans answered by trimming MSU's lead to 14-7 with 22 seconds remaining before halftime.  Dakota State kicked off the third quarter, knotting the game at 14-14 before Mayville State scored the next 10 points to open a 24-14 lead with 2:21 left in the third.  The Trojans stormed back in the fourth quarter, starting with a safety followed by a touchdown and 2-point PAT attempt to tie the game at 24-24 with 10:08 to go.  DSU continued its scoring surge with two more touchdowns to secure the win, outgained MSU 168-21 in total offensive yards in the final 15 minutes of the game. 

Adin Jungers was 17-of-25 for 168 yards with two touchdowns for DSU, completing at least a pass to nine different receivers.  He added 24 rushes for 93 yards with two touchdowns.  Caleb Dwyer led the defense with nine tackles.  Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck added six tackles.

The series began in 1986 when Mayville State won the first nine meetings with Dakota State.  Then, DSU went on to win 11 straight meetings until the streak ended in 2010.  The Trojans and the Comets were former members of the Dakota Athletic Conference during the 2000's decade.

Vikings pull away past Trojans in defensive battle
Madison, S.D. (Sept. 16, 2023)—Valley City State (N.D.) pulled away late in a defensive battle with Dakota State (S.D.) at Dan Beacom Track Complex.  Holding a slim 7-6 lead after three quarters, the Vikings scored a touchdown and PAT extra-point kick and held off DSU's late comeback for a 14-6 victory.

VCSU opened with a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with 8:01 on the clock.  DSU answered with a 26-yard field goal, trailing 7-3 with 1:28 to go in the first quarter. 

Both teams were unable to score in the second quarter as the Vikings held on to a 7-3 halftime lead, despite a missed 40-yard field goal with less than two minutes left.  Jahns added a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter as the Trojans cut VCSU's lead to 7-6 with 3:23 remaining.  Valley City State scored a touchdown in the early fourth quarter to pull away by the score of 14-6.  DSU's comeback attempt fell short as they turned the ball on downs near the midfield.

Joseph Cole was 15-of-27 for 126 passing yards for the Trojans.  He also rushed 17 times for 45 yards.  Gavin Holland added nine rushes for 32 yards.  Austin Lake caught five passes for 40 yards.  Michael Hybertson added three receptions for 23 yards.  Nathan Cook had two catches for 21 yards.

Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led Dakota State's defense with 10 tackles.  Collin Brueggeman added eight tackles and a quarterback sack.  Brandon Dannenbring and Kani Johnson each recorded five tackles. 

Valley City State outgained Dakota State 255-215 in total offensive yards.  The Trojans rushed 89 yards compared to the Vikings 80 rushing yards.  VCSU passed 175 yards to DSU 126 passing yards.  Valley City State recorded a time possession of 30 minutes, 25 seconds.  Dakota State had the ball for 29 minutes, 35 seconds. 

Looking back to Trojans-Comets series meeting
Madison, S.D. (Sept. 28, 2023)—Dakota State (S.D.) had won 11 times in the last 12 meetings in the all-time series with Mayville State (N.D.), including winning eight consecutive meetings after their 38-24 come-from-behind victory at Jerome Berg Field last season.

The Trojans had won six straight games at Jerome Berg Field since 2015.  Dakota State averaged 33.3 points per game during their six-game winning streak held at Jerome Berg Field. 
 
DSU had won the last three home meeting with the Comets at the former Trojan Field, with the last victory coming on Sept. 25, 2021.  The Trojans rallied back for a 20-16 homecoming victory over MSU.  Both teams will meet for the first time at Dan Beacom Track Complex on Nov. 4 for their second NSAA meeting. 

Dakota State averaged 28.5 points per game against Mayville State in the previous 20 meetings since Sept. 29, 2007.

—According to the NAIA/PrestoStats as of Thursday, Austin Lake is fifth overall in the North Star Athletic Association with 61.8 receiving yards per game for Dakota State.  He is eighth in the North Star conference with 45.5 receiving yards during conference contests.
 
Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck is also fourth overall in the NSAA with 7.0 tackles per game for the Trojans.  Collin Brueggeman also ranks sixth overall in the league with 5.8 tackles per game.

Dakota State ranks third in the NSAA in defensive allowed per game with 24.5 points per game during the conference season.  The Trojans are also third in the conference with 361.0 yards per game in conference play. 

DSU leads the conference in overall fourth down conversions.  The Trojans converted 8-of-12 on fourth-down plays (66.7 percent conversion rate).  Dakota State is ranked sixth nationally (NAIA) in fourth down conversions and 12th in the NAIA in fourth down percentage.

—After Dakota State's (S.D.) road trip at Dickinson State (N.D.) on Oct. 7, the Trojans return home in nearly one month on Oct. 14 at the Dan Beacom Track Complex.  Dakota State welcomes Waldorf (Iowa) to kick off the second half portion of the North Star Athletic Association schedule.   

This game will be designated as the annual Rushin' for a Cure football game.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink clothing to help raise cancer awareness during the month of October.  Football players also wear pink athletic tape, pink towel, or pink socks.   Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.

Looking ahead to DSU's second half of NSAA conference

—After their two-game road trip at Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday and at Dickinson State (N.D.) next Saturday (Oct. 7), Dakota State (S.D.) begins their second half portion of the North Star Athletic Association with four games remaining.  Three of those games will be held at the Dan Beacom Track Complex.

The Trojans begin their second half of the North Star Athletic Association football schedule at home versus Waldorf (Iowa) on Oct. 14 with a kick-off at 4 p.m.   

Dakota State plays their final road contest of the season at Valley City State (N.D.) on Oct 21 and then take their second North Star's bye week.  The Trojans return home on Nov. 4 versus Mayville State with a 3 p.m. kick-off and close their regular-season schedule versus Dickinson State on Nov. 11 with a 12 p.m. kick-off.
