BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) highlighted with a pair of new school records and the first national qualifier of the 2024-25 women's indoor track & field season Friday afternoon at the South Dakota State D2/NAIA Open. The indoor track & field meet was held at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the campus of SDSU.
A pair of DSU athletes competed in the pentathlon, with the scores going toward the 2025 North Star Athletic Association Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, Feb. 16, at SJAC.
The pentathlon kicked off with 60-meter hurdles with
Amelie Steins collecting 879 points after recording a time of 9.15 seconds.
Casey Olson added 723 points in the same event after registering a time of 9.94 seconds.
Steins cleared the height of 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1.25 inches) for 689 points in the high jump for the Trojans. Olson scored 588 points after clearing the height of 1.47 meters (4 feet, 9.75 inches).
Olson led DSU with a 10.79 meters mark (35 feet, 4.75 inches) for 581 points in the shot put. Steins tallied 485 points after tossing 9.32 meters (30 feet, 7 inches).
Steins claimed the top mark in the long jump, leaping 5.28 meters (17 feet, 4 inches) for 637 points. Olson tallied 482 points after leaping 4.71 meters (15 feet, 5.5 inches).
Steins clocked a time of 2 minutes, 48.96 seconds for 474 points in the final event of the pentathlon for Dakota State. Olson scored 204 points after posting a time of 3 minutes, 19.64 seconds.
Steins finished with 3,164 points and was the top NAIA place finisher in the pentathlon. She broke a 28-year pentathlon school record held by Rachelle DeBeer with 2,967 points (1997). Steins finished third overall in the field and currently ranked No. 18 in the NAIA (top 16 qualify for the national meet in pentathlon).
Olson improved her personal record of 2,578 points to place ninth overall. Her mark is the fifth most in the DSU women's indoor pentathlon school record.
Two Dakota State long-distance runners earned a career best time in the 5000-meter run.
Brooke Beaucaire led the Trojans with a time of 18 minutes, 55.64 seconds to finish sixth.
Madelyn Sylva added a time of 19:39.75.
The first day wrapped up with the 4 x 800-meter relay, where the Trojans produced the NAIA 'B' provisional qualifying time. The members included
Anna Schneider,
Presli White,
Kierra Miller, and
Lindsey Roth clocked a time of 9 minutes, 36.83 seconds to finish third in the race.
Their time is a new school record, break the previous record time of 9:43.79 in 2013 by Kayla Sveen, Stephanie Warnke, Brooke Fritz, and Stephanie Uher.
Dakota State continues their action Saturday on the second day of the SDSU D2/NAIA Open. The first events are set for 12 p.m.
