Trojans fall short to Fighting Saints 8-4 in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) could not overcome St. Francis' (Ill.) second-inning outburst in the second game, falling short by the score of 8-4 Friday afternoon at Kino Sports Complex.  The Trojans kicked off their seven-game stretch in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational.

Dakota State fell to 1-5 overall record.  St. Francis improved to 9-4.

Both teams will meet for the second meeting Saturday afternoon at 1:15 p.m.  The Trojans play another member from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference versus Roosevelt (Ill.) at 11 a.m.

St. Francis (Ill.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • The Fighting Saints took the first lead of the game in the opening inning.  Maddie Massaro hit a single with one out.  Danielle Callahan drilled an RBI double to score Massaro to give USF a 1-0 lead.  Callahan was tagged out at third base on the same play.
  • After Michelle Evdos reached on base by a walk.  Xotchil Lopez blasted a 2-run home run on the ensuing at-bat, giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead. 
  • It was Lopez's first home run this season and fourth overall at Dakota State.
  • St. Francis poured in five runs in the top second frame to overtake a 6-2 lead, highlighted by Maddy Eckberg's 2-RBI double and Massaro's RBI single.
  • The Trojans added a pair of runs in the bottom fourth, thanks to Mackenzie Sims' 2-run home run to score Lopez who started with a walk.  DSU trailed 6-4 after four innings.  It was Sims' third career home run at DSU, her first home run this season.
  • USF sparked their two-run seventh inning with a lead-off home run by Bridget McDermott and Madisen Tucker's RBI single to balloon their lead to 8-4.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the final inning, securing the victory for the Fighting Saints.
  • Lopez and Sims each had a home run and drove in two runs to fuel DSU's offense attack.  Carrington Entringer had a triple.  Rosie Philop added a double. 
  • Evdos, Lopez, and Lia Chan each recorded a walk for the Trojans.
  • Massaro was 4-of-4 at the plate with a double, three singles, and an RBI.  Tucker added two hits and an RBI.  Callahan had a double and two RBIs.
  • Madison Aldendifer (L, 1-2) took the loss in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She worked for six-plus innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits.  Lopez worked in the final inning in relief.
  • Bridget McDermott (W. 7-0) earned the victory after pitching four innings.  She gave up four runs on four hits.  Hannah Vachon (S, 1) recorded the save in relief after tossing three shutout innings.
