ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off another North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series with a doubleheader sweep over Presentation (S.D.) Saturday at the newly Koehler Hall of Fame softball field on the campus of NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.). The Trojans won the pitcher's duel in the first game by the score of 3-1 and roared back from a five-run first inning deficit for a 14-8 game two victory.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 10-15. The Trojans earned their fifth win in the last six North Star conference games after the second game of the doubleheader, producing its best NSAA start in school history since the league was formed in 2013-14 with a 7-3 record. Presentation fell to 10-15 overall record and 4-6 NSAA record.
DSU and PC concludes their league four-game series with another doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. on the same field.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Presentation (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
- The NSAA four-game series opener saw a pitcher's duel between a pair of Dakota State's pitchers Angela Slattery and Madison Aldendifer along with Presentation's Sarah Shevenell.
- The game was scoreless through three innings with only four singles scattered combined by both teams.
- Mackenzie Sims drilled a double with one out in the top fourth frame for DSU. She advanced to third base after PC's wild pitch.
- DSU grabbed the first lead of the game at 1-0 when Rosie Philop produced an RBI ground out to score Sims in the top fourth.
- The Saints scored once in the bottom fifth inning. Cassy Loa hit a single with one out. Camille Vestal drilled an RBI double with two outs to score Loa as PC knotted the game at 1-1.
- The Trojans answered with two runs in the top sixth frame. Michelle Evdos hit a single with one out. Olivia Peterson, pinch hitter for Sims, hit a single to advance Evdos to second base.
- Evdos and Sims each advanced one base after PC's passed ball with two outs in the top sixth. Slattery followed up with a 2-RBI double to score Evdos and Peterson to give DSU a 3-1 lead.
- Aldendifer retired five of the last six PC's batters in the final two innings, allowing just a single in the bottom seventh to secure the victory for Dakota State.
- Slattery sparked the Trojans' offense attack with a double, single, and drove in two runs. Sims added a double. Evdos, Peterson, and Chan each added a hit. Evdos and Chan each registered a walk.
- Vestal led the Saints with a double, single, and an RBI. Bella Pinotti, Kenzie Kuxhaus and Loa each had a single.
- Both teams tallied six hits in the game. PC left six runners on base compared to DSU four runners left on base.
- Slattery (W, 4-3) earned the victory in the pitching circle for Dakota State after tossing five innings. She yielded one run on five hits and recorded four strikeouts. Aldendifer (S, 4) earned the save after shutting down PC in the final two innings in relief, allowing just a single.
- Shevenell (L, 8-9) took the complete game setback for Presentation, despite recording a game-high 10 strikeouts. She gave up three runs on six hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 14, Presentation (S.D.) 8 – FINAL
- Presentation erupted for five runs in the opening inning of the second game. Dakota State roared back by outscoring the Saints 14-3 in the final six innings to secure the doubleheader sweep. The Saints did not score in the final four innings of the game.
- The Saints grabbed a 5-0 lead after the first inning, highlighted by a pair of 2-RBI singles by Chloe Dominger and Loa and an RBI single by Kenzie Kuxhaus.
- With bases loaded situation and two outs in the top sixth, Sarah Torres hit an RBI single to score Philop as the Trojans trailed 5-1.
- Presentation extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom second frame after two runs scored.
- Dakota State racked up four runs in the top third inning to trim their deficit down to two runs. Evdos led off with a double, followed by Xotchil Lopez's single to advance Evdos to third base. Evdos and Lopez recorded a double steal as the Trojans trailed 7-2.
- DSU cut PC's lead to 7-3 in the top third after Philop's RBI single to score Lopez.
- With bases loaded situation and one out in the top third, Elizabeth Whitesides hit an RBI single to score Emily McGaugh (pinch runner for Philop) as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 7-4.
- Chan scored home after a passed ball committed by the Saints as DSU trailed 7-5 in the top third.
- Presentation made it 8-5 in the bottom half of the third inning with an RBI double by Vestal.
- Dakota State produced another four-run offense attack in the top fourth inning, highlighted by Chan's 3-run home run to tie the game at 8-8. Slattery scored home caused by PC's wild pitch to give DSU its first lead of the game at 9-8.
- DSU's Carrington Entringer led off with a single followed by Evdos' walk to advance Entringer to second base to kick off the top fifth inning. Entringer and Jacquelyn Folkers, pinch runner for Evdos, each advanced one base after a wild pitch by the Saints.
- Lopez hit a 2-RBI single to score Entringer and Folkers as the Trojans' lead grew to 11-8 in the top fifth.
- Aldendifer added a 2-RBI single and Chan hit an RBI sacrifice fly to widen DSU's lead to 14-8 in the top seventh inning.
- Presentation left two runners when the game ended, securing the victory for Dakota State.
- Evdos was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and scored three times for DSU. Lopez added 4-of-5 with four singles and two RBIs. Chan had a home run, single, and drove in a game-high four runs.
- Aldendifer had a single and two RBIs for the Trojans. Slattery added two hits. Whitesides tallied three singles and an RBI.
- Torres collected three singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Entringer and Philop each had a hit.
- Vestal had two hits and an RBI for Presentation. Loa added two singles and two RBIs. Kuxhaus tallied two RBIs. Skye Carter recorded two singles.
- Dakota State outhit Presentation 19-8 in the game. The Saints left 10 runners on base compared to the Trojans nine runners left on base.
- Philop started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State, working for two outs in the first inning. Slattery (W, 5-3) earned her second win on the same day after tossing 3 1/3 innings in relief. She allowed three runs (one unearned) on two hits.
- Aldendifer (S, 3) notched her second save on the same day for DSU, shutting down the Saints in the final three innings in relief. She limited PC to two hits.
- Shevenell worked for the first three innings for the Saints, allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Yulissa Pena (L, 2-7) took the loss after tossing four innings in relief. She gave up seven runs on seven hits.
