ABERDEEN, S.D. – Despite falling short 4-1 in the first game of the doubleheader to host-team Presentation (S.D.) Monday afternoon at the newly Northern State's softball field Koehler Hall of Fame, Dakota State (S.D.) pound out 13 hits in 10-2 five-inning game two victory to earn their second straight North Star Athletic Association's four-game series.
Dakota State, who won the first two game of the four-games series on April 9, improved their overall record to 11-16. The Trojans continued its best North Star Athletic Association's 12-game start with 8-4 record. DSU had won six times in the last eight North Star contests. Presentation is 11-16 overall record and 5-7 NSAA conference record.
Dakota State returns home Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader with Briar Cliff (Iowa). First game is set for 3 p.m. at Thue Field in downtown Madison, S.D.
Game 1 – Presentation (S.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
- Presentation (S.D.) produced three runs in the bottom third inning of the first game to hold off Dakota State (S.D.) 4-1.
- PC's Breanna Dunn led off with a single, followed by Camille Vestal's walk. Sarah Shevenell hit a single with two outs to set up a bases loaded situation.
- Dunn scored home after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans, giving Presentation a 1-0 lead in the bottom third.
- Presentation made it 3-0 as Skye Carter hit a 2-RBI single to score Vestal and Shevenell in the bottom third inning.
- DSU snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth frame. Xotchil Lopez and Angela Slattery hit back-to-back singles with one out. Lia Chan drilled a two-out RBI double to score Lopez as the Trojans trailed 3-1.
- With bases loaded situation in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Chole Dominger recorded an RBI walk to extend the Saints' lead to 4-1.
- DSU left two runners on base when the game ended in the top seventh, securing the victory for PC.
- The Trojans outhit the Saints 8-7 in the game. Both teams left nine runners on base.
- Chan tallied a double, single and an RBI for Dakota State. Mackenzie Sims added two singles and a stolen base. Sarah Torres, Lopez, and Slattery each recorded a single. Madison Aldendifer had a walk.
- Carter led the Saints with a single and drove in two runs. Dominger added a hit and an RBI. Shevenell had two hits. Cassy Loa hit a double.
- Slattery (L, 4-4) took the setback in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She worked for 3 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. She recorded four strikeouts. Aldendifer tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief, yielding one run on three hits.
- Shevenell (W, 9-9) earned a complete game victory for Presentation. She gave up one run on eight hits and registered eight strikeouts.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 10, Presentation (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
- All nine DSU starting batters recorded at least a hit in 10-2 five-inning rout over PC to close out the NSAA four-game series. The Trojans scored at least a run in all five innings.
- Torres led off with a single for DSU followed by Carrington Entringer's hit-by-pitch in the opening inning. The Trojans made it 1-0 when Michelle Evdos hit an RBI single to score Torres with two outs (Entringer advanced to second base).
- After Entringer swiped to third base, Aldendifer followed up with an RBI single to score Entringer to extend DSU's lead to 2-0 in the top first.
- When PC set up a bases loaded with two outs situation, Victoria Vau recorded an RBI walk as DSU's lead was cut to 2-1.
- The Trojans added a run in the top second inning. Elizabeth Whitesides hit a single with one out and advanced to second base. Torres hit a fly out to center field and advanced Whitesides to third base.
- Entringer drilled an RBI double with two outs to score Whitesides as DSU's lead grew to 3-2 in the top second.
- With runners on third and second bases in the bottom half of the second inning, Vestal recorded an RBI sacrifice fly as the Saints trailed 3-2.
- Evdos and Aldendifer reached on base by a walk in the top third inning. Slattery and Chan each hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Evdos and Aldendifer to put DSU up 5-2.
- The Trojans poured in three runs in the top fourth inning, thanks to three straight singles by Sims, Lopez, and Evdos.
- Aldendifer recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Sims for Trojans 6-2 lead in the top fourth.
- Dakota State made it 8-2 as Slattery drilled a 2-out 2-RBI double to score Lopez and Evdos in the top fourth frame.
- With Torres on second base and Whitesides on first base in the top fifth, both runners swiped one base. On the same play, the Saints committed a defensive error to allow Torres to score for 9-2 DSU lead.
- With bases loaded situation after a walk each by Sims and Evdos, Aldendifer produced an RBI walk to score Entringer as DSU's lead ballooned to 10-2 in the top fifth frame.
- The Saints left a runner on base when the game ended in the bottom fifth.
- Dakota State outscored Presentation 7-0 in the final three innings of the game to secure the victory in five innings.
- Slattery was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in three runs for the Trojans. Aldendifer added a hit, two walks, and tallied 3 RBIs. Entringer had a double, single, and an RBI. She swiped three bases. Evdos tallied two singles, two walks, and an RBI.
- Whitesides collected two hits for DSU. Torres, Sims, and Lopez each added a single. Torres, Sims, and Aldendifer each recorded a stolen base.
- Presentation was limited to three singles in the game. Dominger, Shevenell and Vau each recorded a single. Vau had an RBI.
- Dakota State left nine runners on base compared Presentation six runners left on base.
- Slattery (W, 5-4) earned the pitching victory for the Trojans. She tossed four innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Rosie Philop pitched a shutout fifth inning in relief.
- Yulissa Pena (L, 2-8) recorded the defeat, despite tossing a complete game. She allowed 10 runs (one unearned) on 13 hits. She registered five strikeouts and issued five walks.
