MARION, Ind. – Despite falling to 10
th place in the NAIA decathlon standings after the pole vault event Thursday on the second day of the 2025 U.S. Marines NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championship at Wildcat Stadium, Dakota State's (S.D.)
Tysen Grinde roared back in the final two decathlon events with personal records to rise to a fifth-place finish and claimed the NAIA All-America honor.
The three-day NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships are being hosted by Indiana Wesleyan. Two DSU athletes were in action on the second day of the national meet.
Grinde started the second day of decathlon with a time of 16.03 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles for 729 points. He followed up with 31.68 meters mark (103 feet, 11 inches) for 498 points in the discus. He fell to 10
th place in the decathlon standings after the pole vault after clearing the height of 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3.75 inches), scoring 549 points.
As Grinde waited for the next decathlon event in the javelin (other athletes competing in the pole vault),
Chantz Minear raced in the first heat of the men's 110-meter hurdles for the Trojans.
Minear clocked a time of 14.16 seconds in the semifinals, placing third in the first heat. After the other two heats were completed, Minear advanced to the NAIA men's 110-meter hurdles national final on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)/1:30 p.m. (Central Time) after producing the fourth fastest overall time in the 18-hurdler field.
Grinde returned to action in the ninth decathlon event, throwing javelin for DSU. He opened with 45.39 meters toss (148 feet, 11 inches) and improved his mark to his personal best 51.80 meters (169 feet, 11 inches) toss on his second attempt.
Grinde soared to his career best javelin mark of 56.20 meters (184 feet, 5 inches) for 681 points on his final attempt. He produced the best javelin throw mark in the 15 decathlon athletes' field. His javelin mark is the second-best mark in DSU men's javelin school history.
The tenth and final decathlon event was the grueling 1500-meter run. Grinde posted his personal record time of 4 minutes, 43.16 seconds to collect 661 points. He finished fourth in the race.
Grinde accumulated a personal best 6,556 points for the Trojans, storming from 10
th place to fifth-place finish in the final two events of the decathlon. He scored the third most decathlon points in Dakota State's school history.
It was Grinde's first appearance as a decathlon athlete at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, his second straight appearance at the national outdoor meet. He competed in last year's national outdoor track & field meet in the high jump.
It was the third time in the last four years that DSU had an All-America in decathlon and their second straight year.
Treshawn Roberts was an All-America in decathlon in the 2024 and 2022 NAIA outdoor track & field national meets.
