Moses, Teel, and Portner receive annual awards from Dakota State Athletics

August 8, 2025

MADISON, S.D. – The 2024-25 Dakota State University athletics annual awards were announced Thursday.  The most outstanding athletes and Dusty Andersen Memorial award recipient were listed.

Deveon Moses of the Trojan football team was selected to the DSU Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year.

Moses piled up numerous athletics accomplishments for the Trojans last fall.  He tied the NAIA in most interceptions with Dijion Walls of Morningside (Iowa) with seven interceptions each.  Moses tied the second most single-season interceptions (Josh Button in 1993, Jeff Rensch in 1991, and Rick Tibbits in 1978) in the DSU football record book (Noah Guse holds the school record with eight interceptions in 2021).

He collected the awards in 2024 fall as the NAIA All-America defensive back, Associated Press (AP) NAIA Football All-America First Team, and North Star Athletic Association Football All-Conference First Team.

Moses was named to the NSAA Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week twice during the 2024 season, as well as earning the NAIA Football National Defensive Player-of-the-Week on Sept. 16.  His highlights included catching two interceptions in DSU's 16-6 homecoming victory over Jamestown (N.D.) at the Brian Kern Family Stadium on Blankley Field.  He returned a 'Pick Six' of 60 yards to secure the victory.

Moses also caught two interceptions in Trojans' 7-0 road victory at Mayville State (N.D.) on Nov. 9, 2024.  He finished the season with 31 tackles and eight break-ups.

The DSU Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year goes to Tabor Teel of the Trojan women's basketball team.  It marked the fifth consecutive season that a student-athlete from the DSU women's basketball program was selected to the annual award.

Teel, a forward for the Trojans, was named to the 2024-25 NAIA Women's Basketball All-America Second Team.  She also collected the final NSAA Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Year award, as well as NSAA All-Conference First Team, and NSAA All-Defense Team.

She led the team with 13.8 points (415 total points) and 8.2 rebounds (247 total rebounds) for the Trojans in 2024-25.  She was 153-of-253 from the field (47.1 percent) and 85-of-120 from the free-throw line.  She also led the team with 34 blocked shots (1.1 blocks per game).

Teel led the NSAA conference in rebounds per game (8.2) and eighth overall in points per game for DSU.

She was an integral member of the Trojan women's basketball team that paved their way to their fifth straight NSAA women's basketball regular season champion.  The Trojans also captured the NSAA postseason tournament's title and qualified for the national tournament for the fifth consecutive season.

Teel earned academic awards for her success in the classroom, earning the NAIA and NSAA conference Scholar Athlete awards.  She was also named to College Sports Communicators Academic All-America® Second Team in NAIA division, as well as All-District® academic award.

The 2025 Dusty Andersen Memorial award recipient is Dawson Portner of the DSU baseball team.

The award is presented each year to an outstanding male basketball or baseball player who exhibits active participation in campus activities.  The award is named Dusty Andersen, who was a letter-winner in both basketball and baseball at Dakota State from 1966 through 1969.  In addition to his athletic involvement, Dusty was active as President of the Varsity Club and was a member of the Student Senate, the band, and the physical education major club.

Portner was a senior third baseman for DSU baseball team.  He served on the Athletics Director Captain's Council.  He completed all community service projects during his four years at Dakota State University.  He served on the baseball teams' leadership for two years.

Portner was a three-time NAIA Scholar Athlete and four-time North Star Athletic Association Scholar Athlete at DSU.  He was a two-time team captain and four-year starter for the Trojans.

He played 151 career games at Dakota State, holding a batting average of .293 and a slugging percentage of .423.  He also recorded 44 hit-by-pitches and hit 23 doubles and 11 home runs.  He holds the fifth all-time in runs scored with 113 runs (scored 47 runs during the 2024 season, which is tied for eight most runs scored in a single season).
