DSU men’s win two titles in regular-season indoor track & field finale

Borowicz wins weight throw title, Johns captures 800-meters title for Dakota State (S.D.)

YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) competed in the final men's indoor track & field regular season meet Friday afternoon in the Mount Marty (S.D.) Last Chance at Ruth Donohoe Fieldhouse.  The Trojans captured two event titles at the meet.

The Trojans had six throwers placed in the top 10 in the weight throw.  Luke Borowicz won the title after throwing 15.96 meters (52 feet, 4.5 inches) for the Trojans.  Houston Lunde followed up with a runner-up finish after tossing 15.62 meters (51 feet, 3 inches).  Zachary Haugen was fifth with 14.97 meters (49 feet, 1.5 inches), followed by Kacey Cauley sixth with 14.67 meters (48 feet, 1.75 inches).  Tarin Bingham was eighth with 13.87 meters (45 feet, 6.25 inches).  Kendall Cauley was 10th with his personal record 13.45 meters (44 feet, 1.5 inches).

Other DSU weight throwers results include Brock Tuttle with a personal best 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1.75 inches) and Robert Begalka with a personal record 12.18 meters (39 feet, 11.5 inches).

Lukus Mentele was second in the shot put after throwing 15.52 meters (50 feet, 11 inches) for DSU.  James McClain followed up with a third-place finish with 15.36 meters mark (50 feet, 4.75 inches).  Trenton Moran was seventh with 14.54 meters (47 feet, 8.5 inches) and Dylan Johansen tenth with 13.44 meters toss (44 feet, 1.25 inches).

Other DSU shot put results include Begalka – 13.09 meters (42 feet, 11.5 inches), Lunde – personal record 13.01 meters (42 feet, 8.5 inches), Joshua Shaffer – 12.13 meters (39 feet, 9.75 inches), and Tuttle – 11.10 meters (36 feet, 5 inches).

Franklin Johns won the 800-meter run title for the Trojans, clocking a time of 1 minute, 59.47 seconds.  Curtis Johnson earned a runner-up honor with his season's best time of 1:59.64.  Tyler Nicke posted a season best time of 2:02.08 to place sixth, followed by Yohannes Kassa with a seventh-place finish in 2:02.37.  Dawson Miller finished the race in 2:08.05, Logan Recoy in 2:11.65, Lucas Harr in 2:17.93 (season best), and Hunter Dimick in 2:28.27 (season best).

Aaron Van Hemert finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 8.95 seconds for DSU.  Bergen Irey added a personal record time of 10.32 seconds in the race.

Van Hemert was fourth in the 400-meter dash after clocking a time of 52.50 seconds.  Brayden Houlette followed up with a time of 52.82 seconds to place sixth, followed by Been Witt with an eighth-place finish in 53.11 seconds and Payton Anderson ninth with 53.13 seconds.  Irey finished with a time of 58.10 seconds and Bryant Paulsen in 58.32 seconds.

Brock Krueger cleared the high jump with his personal record 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches) to finish fifth.

Ashton Sandbulte led the Trojans with 7.26 seconds in the 60-meter dash prelims.  Javon Newkirk finished with a time of 7.69 seconds, followed by Jordan Upton in 7.86 seconds, and Krueger in 7.87 seconds.

Sandbulte clocked a time of 23.96 seconds to finish eighth in the 200-meter dash for Dakota State.  Witt was ninth in 24.02 seconds, followed by Newkirk in 25.17 seconds.

Lane Henrichs paced the Trojans with a fifth-place finish in the 1-mile run with a personal record time of 4:32.40.  Blake Schmiedt added a seventh-place finish in 4:35.20, while Joshua Tucker was ninth with his career best 4:41.55.  Holden Jelen finished 11th with a time of 4:43.93.

Other DSU men's 1-mile run results include Jonah Thiele with a personal record of 4:46.40, Grayson Madsen in 4:48.85, Reese Henrie with a season best 4:49.30, Benjamin Strunk in 4:52.30, David Brock with a personal record 5:02.22, and Kaiden Akey in 5:22.78.

Samuel Olson cleared the pole vault mark of 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1.5 inches) to place ninth.  Irey added 2.80 meters clearance (9 feet, 2.25 inches).

Dakota State prepares for the 2025 North Star Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, Feb. 16.  The first events are scheduled for 10 a.m. at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D., on the campus of NCAA Division I South Dakota State.
