MANKATO, Minn. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned to Mark Schuh Outdoor Track & Field Complex for the second straight weekend Friday, competing in the NCAA Division II Maverick Invitational hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato. The Trojans claimed one event title and a runner-up honor in the meet, featuring schools from NCAA Division II and III.
Dakota State finished sixth as a team, scoring 54 points in the meet. The host team Minnesota State-Mankato captured the title with 198 points, followed by Iowa Central CC second with 132 points, Sioux Falls (S.D.) third with 96 points, Minnesota Duluth fourth with 70 points, and Augustana (S.D.) fifth with 66 points.
Caleb Sayler earned a runner-up honor in the 5000-meter run for the Trojans. He finished the race with a time of 15 minutes, 41.09 seconds.
Lane Henrichs added a sixth-place finish with a time of 16:00.99.
Benjamin Strunk followed up with a seventh-place finish in 16:13.28, while
Joshua Tucker posted a season best time of 16:14.21.
Henrichs registered a personal record time of 9 minutes, 51.77 seconds to place sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase for DSU.
Blake Schmiedt was 10
th with a time of 10:23.71.
Jonah Thiele recorded a personal best time of 10:54.61.
Lucas Harr had a season best time of 12:21.84.
Xander Sheehan produced a third-place finish in the javelin, throwing 42.35 meters (138 feet, 11 inches).
Nolan Slominski led the Trojans with fourth place after clocking a time of 1 minute, 54.99 seconds in the 800-meter run.
Dawson Miller finished with a time of 2:04.80, followed by
David Brock with a personal record of 2:11.69.
Brock Krueger tied his personal record of 1.83 meters (6 feet) in the high jump, finishing fifth.
Bryant Paulsen was eighth after clearing the height of 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches).
Javon Newkirk leaped 4.94 meters (16 feet, 2.5 inches) in the long jump. He also clocked a personal record 23.52 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Samuel Olson cleared the height of 3.91 meters (12 feet, 10 inches) in the pole vault.
Tarin Bingham finished seventh in the hammer throw with 47.45 meters toss (155 feet, 8 inches).
Luke Borowicz was ninth with 46.78 meters mark (153 feet, 5 inches).
Houston Lunde threw 44.06 meters (144 feet, 6 inches).
Borowicz threw 40.12 meters (131 feet, 7 inches) in the discus for Dakota State.
Jack Hemmen added 39.06 meters mark (128 feet, 1 inch).
Robert Begalka tossed 13.81 meters (45 feet, 3.75 inches) in the shot put.
Ashton Sandbulte finished eighth in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 11.26 seconds. He advanced to the finals where he improved his time to 11.19 seconds where he finished sixth. Newkirk clocked a time of 11.89 seconds, followed by
Willie Hutchins in 11.90 seconds.
Lukas Bennett clocked a career best time of 49.98 seconds to place ninth in the 400-meter dash.
Mohamed Muse added a personal record 50.63 seconds to finish 13
th.
Ben Witt posted a season best time of 51.44 seconds. Other DSU results included
Franklin Johns in 51.95 seconds,
Noah Haynes in 57.01 seconds, and Paulsen in 58.87 seconds.
Yohannes Kassa led DSU with a time of 4 minutes, 15.49 seconds in the 1500-meter run.
Logan Recoy finished the race in 4:17.32, followed by
Tyler Nicke with a personal best time of 4:19.34.
Grayson Madsen added a personal record of 4:20.30.
Curtis Johnson registered a time of 4:21.98, followed by
Holden Jelen in 4:27.94, and
Hunter Dimick with a personal best time of 4:59.97.
The Trojans concluded the day by winning the 4 x 400-meter relay title. The relay team of Bennett, Johns, Muse, and Slominski finished with the season best time of 3 minutes, 22.97 seconds. The team of Witt, Johnson, Recoy, and Miller was fifth in 3:36.18, followed by the team of Madsen, Nicke, Kassa, and Schmiedt sixth in 3:37.35.
Dakota State heads to Yankton, S.D., Wednesday for the Mount Marty (S.D.) Invitational. The Trojans will take selected members of the team to the annual premier event in the nation, the Drake Relays Thursday through next Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
